The main use of Femilon (0.02 + 0.15) is to prevent unwanted pregnancy. But sometimes, your doctor may give you this medicine to treat some other condition. The combination birth control pill is having two active ingredients namely Ethinyl Estradiol and Desogestrel, both of which are female sex hormone. It works by preventing ovulation or the release of a female egg from the ovaries. It also causes changes in the cervical and uterine lining making the cervical mucus more viscous, thereby making it harder for male sperms to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus wall. This drug function essentially by preventing the male sperms from reaching the womb but they do not always stop the female egg from fertilizing which is how the combined hormones contraceptive pills work.

You must not take Femilon (0.02 + 0.15) mg if are pregnant or if you have recently delivered a baby, have heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting disorder, problems with circulation, problems in eyes or kidneys due to diabetes, unexplained vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, or migraine. If you are a smoker and above 35, then you must avoid taking the birth control pill. Women having breast or uterine cancer are advised to consult their doctor before using a birth control pill. Your doctor might already be aware of your medical history and let him know if not. Do not commence, stop, or alter the course of any medications without the advice of your doctor. The combination drug may react with the following drugs: anti-seizure medications like carbamazepine, phenytoin and primidone; antibiotics like rifampicin or rifabutin; anti-viral like ritonavir; antifungals like griseofulvin; Medical charcoal used for stomach upsets, or antidepressants like St John's Wort.

Some of the side effects of Femilon (0.02 + 0.15) are irregular vaginal bleeding, infection in the vagina, missed, irregular or painful menstrual periods, cysts in ovaries, lethargy, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, uneasy feeling in breasts, depression, acne, appetite changes, unexpected weight increase, loss of interest in sex, unusual hair loss. If any of these conditions deteriorate or persist for a longer duration, seek immediate medical help.

Get urgent medical help if you experience extreme pain and swelling in either of your legs, an indication of thrombosis, sudden chest pain, breathing difficulty and an unusual or bloody cough. The above side effects are not the complete ones and you may get other reactions due to Femilon. All side effects should be notified to your doctor if you feel it is serious or life-threatening.

Take one pill every day orally and ensure that you do not go more than 24 hours without a pill. Femilon is a prescription-only pill. Do not start taking the drug without consulting your doctor who is the right person to prescribe you after properly examining you and your history. As mentioned above, you cannot take this birth control pill or take it with some restrictions if you have a history of certain disorders or are currently suffering from them. Take the pill as advised by your doctor. Normal intake is one Femilon pill via the oral route every day at the same time. Swallow the whole pill with water.
