Vagifem 25 mg is a medicine that contains estrogen hormones. It treats symptoms such as vaginal dryness, burning, irritation in or around the vagina, and difficulty or burning on urination associated with menopause. Other uses of Vagifem 25 mg include:

   — Conditions in which a young woman’s ovaries do not produce enough estrogen naturally.

   — Certain types of abnormal vaginal bleeding due to hormonal imbalance

   — Certain cancers in men and women

   — Thinning of bones (osteoporosis) from menopause

Vagifem 25 mg should not be used in individuals with any of the following conditions:

   — Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding

   — History of breast cancer in selected patients being treated with metastatic disease.

   — Estrogen depended on neoplasia (formation of new, abnormal growth of tissue)

   — Liver dysfunction or disease

   — Deep vein thrombosis develops when a blood clot forms in one or more veins, usually in the legs.

   — There is no indication of Vagifem in pregnancy. There is little or no increased risk of congenital disabilities in children born to women who have inadvertently used estrogens and progestins from oral birth control pills during early pregnancy.

Vagifem 25 mg should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to its ingredients. It may cause allergic-type reactions, including bronchial asthma, in certain susceptible individuals.

Estrogen therapy has been associated with an increased risk of heart problems such as heart attack and stroke. If a heart problem is suspected, Vagifem should be discontinued immediately.

Common side effects include breast pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, irregular vaginal bleeding /spotting, and stomach pain. Other side effects are fluid retention, high blood sugar, liver problems, enlargement of benign tumours, high blood pressure, vaginal yeast infection, and darkening of the skin, particularly on the face. These are not all the possible side effects of Vagifem. For more information, please talk to your doctor.

Generally, when estrogen is prescribed to a postmenopausal woman with a uterus, a progestin should be given to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer. A woman without a uterus does not require progestin. Whether you have been prescribed estrogen alone or in combination with progestin, your doctor will always recommend the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Vagifem should be administered intravaginally using the applicator supplied along with the medicine. The recommended dose is one tablet daily for two weeks. Postmenopausal women should be re-evaluated periodically to determine if treatment is still necessary. Follow your doctor’s advice for more information.
