LOSARTAN POTASSIUM
It is an angiotensin II receptor (type AT 1) antagonist. Losartan and its principle active metabolite block the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotension II by selectively blocking the blinding of angiotensin II to the AT.
Indications: Mild to moderate hypertension alone or in combination with other antihypertensives.
Dosage: 25-100 mg once or twice daily. Starting and maintenance dose: 50 mg once a day. In volume depleted patients: 25 mg once daily.
Contra-indications: Hypersensitivity, pregnancy.
Special Precautions: Should not be sued with potassium sparing diuretics. Monitor serum potassium in elderly patients and patients with renal impairment.
Paediatrics: Safety not established.
Pregnancy: Contraindicated.
Lactation: Contraindicated.
Side-effects: Diarrhoea, dyspepsia, myalgia oedema, dizziness & headache.
Drug Interactions: Cimetidine increases the AUC of losartan by about 18 %. Risk of hyperkalemia increases with concomitant use of potassium sparing diuretics or potassium supplements.
