Esomeprazole Magnesium belongs to a family of drugs called proton pump inhibitors, a drug which causes lower acid production in the stomach. This drug is prescribed for the patients of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other similar conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This medication is also prescribed for the treatment of erosive esophagitis.
Hence Esomeprazole is very beneficial in treating the stomach problem related to gastritis and acid reflux problems.
Understanding the drug:
How it works?
This drug is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the secretion of hydrochloric acid or gastric acid in the stomach through the walls. This HCl is required for the digestion purpose and is hence released by the parietal cells in the walls of the stomach. The secretion of the acid is induced by proton pump. Esomeprazole blocks these pumps hence reduce the amount of acid content in the stomach and hence reduces the acidity problems.
Who should avoid it?
You must not take Esomeprazole Magnesium medication if you:
- Are allergic to it or to any other Benzimidazole drugs such as Albendazole, or Mebendazole
- Have severe liver disease or magnesium deficiency
- Have chest pain with pain advancing to the arm sweating
- Have osteoporosis or osteopenia
- Are breastfeeding (take as per doctor’s advice only)
- Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the near future, then always inform your doctor beforehand

How to take?
You must take Esomeprazole Magnesium medication (Nexium, Izra) strictly as prescribed by your doctor and no change in the dosage must be made whatsoever without your doctor’s advice. You should take the whole medicine and swallow the tablet with water as a whole. You should not break or crush the tablet.
How much to take?
The dose should be as prescribed by the doctor only. You should not try to change or increase the dose without informing the doctor.
When to take?
Take this drug at the same time each day. The tablet should be taken one hour before the meal. You should take it at the same time each day so as to avoid forgetting the dose and to make it work faster.
For how long should it be taken?
Esomeprazole Magnesium’s normal prescription period is normally for 4 to 8 weeks only. A second course may be recommended depending on your condition. Always follow your doctor’s directions properly. Your symptoms may be gone even before the condition is healed completely. Get medical attention if you condition doesn’t improve or deteriorates while taking Esomeprazole Magnesium.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of Esomeprazole, take it as soon as you remember. Don’t take the missed dose if the time to take the next dose is almost up. Taking multiple doses near to each other can lead to excess medication in your body which can be dangerous.
What if I overdose?
In case of an overdose of this drug then get emergency medical attention or call the doctor immediately. Overdose symptoms are:
- Blurred vision
- Rapid heartbeat
- Dry mouth
- Shortness of breath
What are the side effects?
If you get some allergic reactions to Esomeprazole Magnesium like skin hives, breathing difficulty, swelling in face, lips, tongue, or throat then you should visit your doctor immediately. This drug may have following side effects:
- Feeling jittery
- Irregular and fast heart rate
- Jerking muscle movements,
- Watery or bloody diarrhea
- Muscle cramps or weakness
- Limp feeling
- Cough or choking, or seizure.
What drugs may interact with Esomeprazole Magnesium?
Do not take Esomeprazole Magnesium medication (Nexium, Nexpro) along with:
- Anti-HIV/AIDS (Atazanvir, Nelfavir)
- St. John's wort
Things and Activities to avoid:
- Don’t take medication for diarrhea without your doctor’s advice.
- Your doctor may advise some restrictions regarding food, beverages and activities. Obey him or her strictly.
