What is Esomeprazole Magnesium?

Esomeprazole Magnesium is a drug which causes lower acid production in the stomach. It belongs to a family of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. This medication will however not give immediate relief from heartburn. Esomeprazole Magnesium is sold under various trade names, some of which are Nexium and Nexpro (manufactured by Torrent Pharma).
Esomeprazole Magnesium is prescribed for people with gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other similar conditions characterized by excessive amount of acid production in the stomach such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This medication is also prescribed for the treatment of erosive esophagitis, condition in which the stomach acid reaches the esophagus and damages it.
Esomeprazole Magnesium may also be advised along with an antibiotic to prevent gastric ulcer due to infection with helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). This medication may also be advised for conditions not listed above.

Important Information about Esomeprazole Magnesium

You must not take Esomeprazole Magnesium medication if you are allergic to it or to any other benzimidazole drugs such as albendazole, or mebendazole. This medication will not give you instant relief if you have heartburn due to acid reflux. Notify your doctor beforehand if you have severe liver disease or magnesium deficiency so that he or she can judge whether it is safe for you to take Esomeprazole Magnesium.
Initial symptoms of heart attack are often misunderstood as heartburn. Get immediate and urgent medical attention if you have chest pain with pain advancing to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, and a general ill feeling.
Some conditions are treated with a combination of Esomeprazole Magnesium and antibiotics. Always follow the directions of your doctor. A patient leaflet is provided with all medications. Read the instructions in them carefully. Do not alter the prescribed dosages in any way. Complete the full course of Esomeprazole Magnesium even if your symptoms have subsided.

Taking a proton pump inhibitor like Esomeprazole Magnesium may put you on a risk of bone fracture in the hip, wrist, or spine. This side effect has been observed in people who have taken the medication for a long time or at high doses, and in those who are 50 years or age or more. It is not known properly if Esomeprazole Magnesium is the actual reason behind the risk of bone fractures. Make sure to inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or osteopenia (low bone mineral density).
Esomeprazole Magnesium is a FDA pregnancy category B drug which means it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby if it is taken during pregnancy. Notify your doctor about your pregnancy or any plan to become pregnant in the near future. It is not known if Esomeprazole Magnesium can pass into breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Never take this medication without your doctor’s advice if you are breast feeding.

How should I take Esomeprazole Magnesium?

You must take Esomeprazole Magnesium medication (Nexium, Nexpro) strictly as prescribed by your doctor and no change in the dosage must be made whatsoever without your doctor’s advice. Esomeprazole Magnesium’s normal prescription period is normally for 4 to 8 weeks only. A second course may be recommended depending on your condition. Always follow your doctor’s directions properly. Your symptoms may be gone even before the condition is healed completely. Get medical attention if you condition doesn’t improve or deteriorates while taking Esomeprazole Magnesium.
You may open the delayed-release capsule of Esomeprazole Magnesium and put the medication into a morsel of pudding or applesauce to make swallowing simpler. Don’t keep the food and drug mixture for later use and swallow it immediately without chewing. Throw away the empty capsule.
Esomeprazole Magnesium can be administered using a nasogastric (NG) feeding tube. Ask your doctor about this. Some medical tests which you undergo while taking this medication may give unusual results. Let the lab personnel or the doctor know about your Esomeprazole Magnesium use. Always store Esomeprazole Magnesium in a cool and dry place.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Esomeprazole Magnesium, take it as soon as you remember. Don’t take the missed dose if the time to take the next dose is almost up. Taking multiple doses near to each other can lead to excess medication in your body which can be dangerous.

What if I overdose?

In case of an overdose of Esomeprazole Magnesium, get emergency medical attention or call the Doctor immediately. Overdose symptoms are headache, confusion, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, nauseas, dry mouth, sweating, flushing, shortness of breath, tremor, loss of co-ordination, or seizures.

Things and Activities to avoid while taking Esomeprazole Magnesium

Esomeprazole Magnesium medication (Nexium, Nexpro) can cause diarrhea, which may indicate a new infection. If you have a watery or bloody diarrhea, stop taking Esomeprazole Magnesium and seek medical help immediately. Don’t take medication for diarrhea without your doctor’s advice.
Your doctor may advise some restrictions regarding food, beverages and activities. Obey him or her strictly.

Side Effects of Esomeprazole Magnesium

Get emergency medical help if you get some allergic reactions to Esomeprazole Magnesium (Nexium, Nexpro) like skin hives, breathing difficulty, swelling in face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Esomeprazole Magnesium may lead to low magnesium, symptoms of which are dizziness, confusion, feeling jittery, irregular and fast heart rate, jerking muscle movements, watery or bloody diarrhea, muscle cramps or weakness, limp feeling, cough or choking, or seizure. Stop taking Esomeprazole Magnesium if you get those symptoms and contact your doctor right away.
Some less serious side effects of Esomeprazole Magnesium are headache, rash or itching on skin, upset stomach, insomnia, or mild diarrhea.
The side effects mentioned above are not all the side effects reported or experienced due to Esomeprazole Magnesium.

Dosing Information for Esomeprazole Magnesium

Do not take Esomeprazole Magnesium medication (Nexium, Nexpro) along with anti-HIV/AIDS drugs like atazanvir, nelfavir, or others. Let your doctor know if you are using any of those medications as well as these ones: citalopram, clopidogrel, cilostazol, diazepam, dexamethasone, digoxin, St. John's wort, rifampin, methotrexate, tacrolimus, voriconazole. These medications can interact with Esomeprazole Magnesium if taken simultaneously. However, the drugs mentioned above are not the only ones which can interact with Esomeprazole Magnesium. There may be others. Share your medical history and the list of all medications and related products you may be using with your doctor.
