|
Tiotropium bromide is a long-acting, anticholinergic agent which binds the muscarinic receptors in the bronchial smooth musculature. Tiotropium inhibits the cholinergic (bronchoconstrictive) effects of acetylcholine, released from parasympathetic nerve endings. The long duration is due to the slow dissociation from the M 3 -receptor, exhibiting a significantly longer dissociation half-life than ipratropium.
Formoterol is a potent long-acting selective ß2-receptor agonist, which exhibits a bronchodilator effect by binding to the ß2-receptors in the airways. The combination of tiotropium and formoterol produces additive effects since they target different receptors in the airways. |
