What is acne?
Acne, medically termed Acne Vulgaris, is a common skin disease in which the skin’s pores become clogged. It is not life-threatening, but it may leave scars.Acne most commonly occurs during puberty; dermatologists claim approximately three quarters of 11 to 30-year-old suffer from acne. It impacts both men and women, but its effects last longer in young men as they have higher levels of testosterone, which aggravates acne. There is treatment available for this skin problem, but before getting to that, let’s take a look at what causes acne.

What causes acne?
There isn’t one particular cause of acne, or clogged pores. Pores open to follicles, which contain hair and an oil gland. When these glands produce too much oil, then dirt, bacteria and dead cells build up and block the pores.

Experts believe an increase in levels of a hormone called androgen is a primary cause of acne. During adolescence, androgen levels rise and that in turn causes the oil glands in the skin to grow. The enlarged gland produces more oil, which can also change into a thick white substance called sebum. The excessive oil and sebum can clog and break down the cellular walls in the pores, causing bacteria to grow and pimples to develop.

There are other studies that show acne is genetic. Medications containing androgen and lithium can also cause acne. For those with sensitive skin, greasy cosmetics can cause an outbreak.
