Metolar 100 mg contains metoprolol tartrate, which belongs to a group of medicines known as beta-blockers. It reduces the effect of stress hormones on the heart associated with physical and mental exertion. This, in turn, reduces heart rate Metolar is effective in treating the following conditions:

   — Angina pectoris (Chest pain)

   — High blood pressure

   — Irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) in adults.   

Do not take Metolar 100 mg if you are allergic to Metoprolol, beta-blockers, and other ingredients of this medicine. Avoid taking this medicine if you have heart conduction problems, untreated heart failure, blocked blood vessel problems, blood circulation problems, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD), and increased acidity of the blood. Moreover, Metoprolol should not be taken by intravenous injection if you receive other blood pressure medicines, such as diltiazem and verapamil.  

 

Talk to your doctor before taking Metoprolol:

   — If you have asthma, diabetic mellitus, an overactive thyroid, or high blood pressure due to an adrenal gland tumour

   — If you are going to have an anaesthetic and take metolar tablets. Limited data is available on using Metoprolol in children and adolescents; therefore, this medication is not recommended.

   — If you are taking any other medicines. Metoprolol tablets can affect how other medicines work, and some medications may affect the mode of action of Metoprolol.

 

If metolar 100 mg tablets are to combine with the medicines listed below, you must speak to your doctor before taking this medicine. The medications that need to be avoided with Metoprolol include:

   — Medicines to treat epilepsy, such as phenobarbital.

   — Medicines used to treat cardiovascular r diseases such as quinidine, propafenone, nifedipine, diltiazem, amlodipine, and verapamil.

 

You are advised to avoid alcohol while receiving a beta blocker. Alcohol may increase the blood pressure-lowering effect of Metoprolol.  

 

Metolar 100 mg is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or planning to conceive, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine. The medicine may make you tired and dizzy. Make sure you don’t get affected before you drive or operate machinery.

Tell your doctor if you notice side effects such as feeling faint on standing due to low blood pressure, tiredness, slow heart rate, dizziness, diarrhoea, constipation, headache, stomach pain, slow heart rate, feeling sick, palpitations, cold hands and feet, problem in maintaining balance, and shortness of breath with strenuous physical activity. If you get any side effects, speak to your doctor. This includes any side effects not mentioned in this information guide.

Always take medications exactly as prescribed. Check with your doctor if you are unsure about the usage of this medicine. Metolar should be taken with food and on an empty stomach. The recommended dose is:

 

   — For high blood pressure: Initially 100 mg once a day.

   — For Angina pectoris- Usually, 50 to 100 mg twice daily.

   — The usual maintenance dose for preventive therapy after a heart attack is 100 mg twice daily.

 

Do not suddenly stop taking medicine; this may cause worsening heart failure and increase the risk of a heart attack. If you wish to discontinue treatment, first let your doctor know.
