Desowen Cream .05% (10 gm)

1. As with other topical corticosteroids, Desowen cream should not be used in untreated bacterial and fungal infections of the skin or viral infections with skin lesions, including vaccinia, herpes simplex, and varicella.

2. The product should not be used in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to its components.

3. The safety of corticosteroid solution during pregnancy or lactation has not been established. Potential benefits should be weighed against possible hazards to the fetus or the nursing infant if used during pregnancy or lactation.

4. It is contraindicated in patients with viral lesions of the skin, bacterial or fungal skin infections, skin manifestations relating to tuberculosis or syphilis, parasitic infections, or skin reaction following acne vulgaris, rosacea, vaccinations, pruritus without inflammation.

5. Do not apply the product in or near the eye.

6. Desowen, when used over large areas, on sensitive areas such as facial skin, in skin fold areas like the groin, armpit, or the broken skin for a prolonged period or under an airtight dressing, are more likely to be absorbed into the blood and cause adverse effects. Apply enough to cover the affected areas. Do not apply over large areas unless advised by the doctor.

7. Also, let your doctor know if you have previously used corticosteroids.

8. Do not apply on your breasts if breastfeeding to ensure the infant does not accidentally get the medication in their mouth.

Before using Desowen cream, talk to your doctor if any of the following applies to you:

1. For any skin issues around a leg ulcer, using Desonide cream may make you more likely to get an allergic reaction or an infection around the ulcer.
2. An inflammatory skin disorder due to impaired blood circulation
3. You are pregnant or planning to conceive

While using the topical corticosteroid, talk to your doctor if you develop:

1. Any skin infection
2. An allergic reaction
3. Significant skin irritation
4. Experience thinning or softening

Side effects with Desowen cream include:

    –   Skin thinning or softening

    –   Reactions at the application site include burning and redness.

Inform your doctor if you get serious side effects that do not resolve. 

Apply a thin layer of Desowen cream .05% to the affected area twice daily. Apply enough to cover the affected areas with a thin layer. Gently massage the cream into the affected areas until it disappears. Avoid contact with the eyes and lips. In general, treatment should be limited to four consecutive days. The number of times you use this topical corticosteroid may be reduced as your skin improves. However, it is important not to stop using Desowen cream suddenly, or your skin problem could worsen. If your condition worsens and no improvement is seen within 2 to 4 weeks, contact your doctor immediately.
