Lefumide 20 mg is a medicine approved to treat adults with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. It is also effective in treating psoriatic arthritis. The medicine contains the active ingredient Leflunomide, a class of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Doctors often prescribe Leflunomide to treat rheumatoid alone or in combination with DMARDs. Lefumide blocks the formation of DNA, which plays a crucial role in replicating cells such as those in the immune system. It causes suppression of the immune system to reduce inflammation, bringing up swelling in rheumatoid arthritis. Usually, it takes four to six weeks to feel the effects of the antirheumatic drug. In conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, the immune system mistakenly attacks parts of your body. This causes a significant reduction in inflammation that makes your joints swollen and stiff.

If you are pregnant, considering pregnancy, or have recently delivered a child, you should discuss it with your doctor. Breastfeeding while receiving Lefumide is not recommended. Men taking this anti-rheumatoid drug who wish to become a parent also should talk to their doctors about how to discontinue the medicine. The risk of injury is high if Leflunomide is combined with other medications. Let your doctor know about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medications and natural remedies, as these may reduce the effectiveness of Leflunomide. Any medications that can affect the liver should be cautiously used with Lefumide. Your doctor will conduct regular blood tests while taking medicine, including those for liver function. You should not take this antirheumatic drug if you already suffer from liver disorders like hepatitis or cirrhosis. Also, be sure to notify your doctor of any surgeries while taking this medication, as Leflunomide may make you more likely to get postoperative infections or cause slow healing of wounds.

The most reported side effect of Lefumide 20 mg is diarrhoea. This symptom frequently improves with time or by taking a medicine to prevent diarrhoea. If diarrhoea persists for longer, the dose of Lefumide may need to be reduced. Less common side effects of this antirheumatic drug include indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, and hair loss. Leflunomide can cause abnormal liver function tests or decreased platelet counts and blood cells in some people. Rarely, this medicine may cause lung problems such as shortness of breath, cough, or lung injury.

Lefumide is usually given as a 20 mg tablet once daily. Doctors usually prescribe a loading dose to be taken when the medicine is first prescribed. The loading dose of Lefumide is usually five 20 mg tablets once weekly for three weeks. It may take up to several weeks after starting Leflunomide to experience relief in joint pain or swelling. Full benefits are usually seen 6 to 12 weeks after starting the medication. Because it’s a long-term treatment, you should keep taking medicine even if it doesn’t seem to be working. For best results, use this medicine under the supervision of a doctor.
