Foseal 800 mg is used for the control of hyperphosphatemia in adult patients receiving haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. It contains Sevelamer, which bind phosphate from food in the digestive tract and thus reduces serum phosphate levels in the bloodstream.

Your doctor may prescribe Foseal tablets such as Vitamin D and calcium supplements to prevent the development of bone disease. Increased serum phosphate levels can cause hard deposits in your body called calcification. The build-up of hard substances can stiffen your blood vessels and make it harder to pump blood around your body. This causes red eyes, itchy skin, bone pain and fractures.

Do not take Foseal 800 mg tablets if:

  • You have low levels of phosphate in your bloodstream. Your doctor will perform a test to check this
  • You have a bowel obstruction
  • You are allergic to the active ingredient Sevelamer or any other ingredients of the medicine

You should talk to your doctor before taking the Sevelamer tablet if you have swallowing problems, movement problems, active bowel inflammation, and have undergone major stomach surgery. The drug is not recommended for use in children. Due to either kidney problems or dialysis treatment, some patients may develop low or high calcium levels in the blood. Since Foseal 800 does not contain calcium, your doctor might prescribe treatment to cure calcium problems. Sometimes, a low amount of vitamin D can also occur in some patients. Therefore, your doctor may monitor Vitamin D levels in the blood and prescribe an additional vitamin D tablet if required. Patients who have not been taking multivitamins supplements can develop low vitamin A, E, K, and folic acid levels in their bloodstream. Therefore, your doctor may check these levels and vitamin supplements as per need.

Let your doctor know if you are taking other medicines. Foseal 800 tablets should not be used at the same time as ciprofloxacin antibiotics. If you are taking medications for epilepsy, heart rhythm disorders, you should consult your doctor when taking a Sevelamer formulation. The effects medicines such as mycophenolate, cyclosporin, and tacrolimus primarily used to suppress the immune system may be reduced Sevelamer use. The recommended dose for adults and elderly patients is one to two tablets of 800 m with each meal, thrice a day. It is important to swallow the tablet whole without breaking or crushing it. During the initial days of the treatment, your doctor will check the phosphorus levels in your bloodstream for 2 to 4 weeks and may make dose adjustments when required to reach an adequate phosphate level. Patients taking Sevelamer formulation should stick to their prescribed diet. In case of accidental overdose, you should contact your doctor.
