Althrocin 250 mg is a prescription medicine used to treat various bacterial infections. It contains the active ingredient, erythromycin, which is a macrolide-type antibiotic. Erythromycin works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Althrocin tablets are used to prevent and treat infections such as:

 

    — Throat and sinus infections

    — Eye infection

    — Ear infections

    — Mouth and dental infections

    — Chest infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia

    — Stomach and intestinal infections

    — Skin and tissue infections, such as acne

    — Prevention of infection, burns, operations, or dental procedures

    — Other infections, such as bone infections, sexually transmitted diseases or scarlet fever

 

This medicine will not work for viral infections such as the common cold and flu. Unnecessary use or misuse of antibiotics can lead to decreased effectiveness.  

 

Althromycin 250 mg is contraindicated with known hypersensitivity to this antibiotic. It should not be given to patients who are taking any of the following medicines:

 

  • Ergotamine or dihydroergotamine to treat migraine
  • Terfenadine or mizolastine is widely used for hay fever and allergies
  • Medicines for stomach disorders
  • Simvastatin for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood
  • Tolterodine for treating overactive bladder

 

Let your doctor know before taking erythromycin tablets if you have:

 

  • Liver problems
  • A condition called myasthenia gravis causes muscle weakness.
  • Heart problems
  • Previously experienced diarrhoea following the use of antibiotics
  • Taking other medicines is believed to cause serious disturbances in the heart.

 

Treating a young child with antibiotics and if he/she vomits when fed, you should contact your doctor immediately.   

Stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, and loose stools may occur. If these side effects persist or worsen, let your doctor know. Get immediate help straight away if any of these rare but serious side effects occur:

 

  • Severe dizziness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or throat
  • Fainting
  • Fast/irregular heartbeat
  • Severe skin reactions including large fluid-filled blisters, sore and ulcers
  • Ulcers in the mouth and throat may be signs of an allergic reaction.

 

If you get any side effects, please talk to your doctor. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this information guide.   

    — Always take medicine the same way your doctor has told you. Ask your doctor if you are not sure.

 

    — Althrocin is an oral medicine to be taken with a glass of water. Althrocin works best when taken empty stomach; however, you can also take it 1 or 2 hours after having a meal.

 

    — Try taking it daily at evenly gap intervals as prescribed to experience the best results.

 

    — The recommended dose of Althrocin for adults and children may vary. You may be told to take more tablets if you have serious infections. Check with your doctor for the correct dosage that suits your health condition.

 

    — Continue to take this antibiotic drug until the course is completed or until your doctor tells you to stop. Do not discontinue treatment too early, even if you feel better. If you stop taking medicine too early, the infection may return.

 

    — If you accidentally take more tablets in one day than your doctor advised, contact your doctor immediately.
