Glucobay contains Acarbose, an oral alpha-glucosidase inhibitor for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is used as a monotherapy or along with sulfonylurea, metformin, or insulin to lower blood glucose levels in adult patients with Type 2 diabetes in addition to a healthy diet, exercise, and weight reduction program. Acarbose, the medicine's active ingredient, slows the absorption of glucose from your gut to reduce the high blood glucose levels after each meal.

Glucobay is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to Acarbose or any ingredient in the formulation. It should not be used in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis. The use of alpha-glucosidase inhibitors is contraindicated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, colonic ulceration, or in patients predisposed to intestinal obstruction. Additionally, Acarbose should not be used in patients with chronic intestinal disorders associated with digestion or absorption and in patients who suffer from stages that may deteriorate due to increased gas information in the intestine. Glucobay tablets are not recommended for children under 18 years of age.

Some drugs can interact with Acarbose tablets. These include diuretics, cholestyramine, digoxin, corticosteroids, estrogen, phenytoin, oral contraceptives, nicotinic acid, thyroid medications, and sympathomimetics.

You may experience some side effects while taking Glucobay tablets. The most common ones are gastrointestinal, such as abdominal discomfort and flatulence. You may also pass softer stools or diarrhoea, particularly after a meal. Normally, these symptoms resolve within a few days. You should avoid taking an antacid to treat these symptoms as it is less likely to be effective. If your symptoms persist for longer or if you have any other unwanted effects, consult your doctor.

Glucobay, when used alone, should not cause low blood sugar. However, sulfonylurea or insulin may cause low blood sugar. If you develop hypoglycemia while receiving Glucobay, either alone or with sulfonylurea, metformin, or insulin, do not treat it with normal glucose; instead, take a glucose tablet.

Take Glucobay tablets as prescribed by your doctor. Take the tablet orally with the first meal of the day. Do not take this medicine between meals. It is important to monitor your blood glucose levels according to the instructions given to you by your doctor. The usual dose is 50mg once daily. The usual maintenance dose is 50 mg thrice daily.
