Enapril is an ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor drug. It is prescribed primarily for treating hypertension (high blood pressure), congestive heart failure and improving the chances of survival after a heart attack.

Enalapril (main salt composition) is also prescribed to treat a disorder of the ventricles (the heart's lower chambers that allow blood to flow out of the heart). This disorder can decrease the heart’s ability to pump blood into the body. Enapril may also be given for conditions not mentioned here.

Do not take Enapril if you are allergic to it, have ever had angioedema, or have an allergy to any other ACE inhibitor such as ramipril, captopril, fosinopril, benazepril, moexipril, and others.

To ensure this medicine is safe, inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions:

Congestive heart failure, kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis), liver disease, diabetes, or a history of blood clots or stroke. If you have diabetes or kidney disease, you may not be able to take this medicine if you also take a blood pressure medicine with aliskiren. Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may cause too much body water loss and increase the risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance while taking Enalapril. Ensure that you consume plenty of fluids. Enalapril can cause kidney problems. Notify your doctor immediately if you have swelling, rapid weight gain, little or no urinating, or breathlessness.

Enalapril is a pregnancy category D drug. Do not take it if you are a pregnant or breastfeeding woman. If you become pregnant during the treatment with this medicine, stop taking it and talk to your doctor.

If you are being treated for high blood pressure, continue taking Enalapril even if you don’t have any symptoms. High blood pressure doesn’t have any outward signs. You may have to take this medicine for many years.

Things and Activities to avoid while taking Enalapril

Avoid alcohol as consuming alcohol further lowers blood pressure. Also, avoid activities which require a high level of mental awareness and reflexes (such as driving). Enalapril may increase your potassium levels. Hence, avoid potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium while taking this medicine.

Many other drugs can interact with Enalapril. Let your doctor know in advance if you use any medicine or supplements.

Some common side effects of Enalapril are dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, or headache. If any of these effects persist or deteriorate, get medical attention immediately. A serious side effect is unlikely. However, visit your doctor if you get any serious side effects due to elevated potassium levels (fast, irregular or rapid heartbeat, muscle weakness), fainting, decreased urination, or any other serious side effect.

Enalapril dosage may depend on a range of factors like age, sex, drug allergies, or seriousness of the condition, among several other factors. Your doctor will determine your dosage after examining you properly. Remember to follow his advice properly for the best results.

Do not alter the dosage unless recommended. Also, do not take this medication after the prescribed period is over. All medications come with a patient leaflet. Refer to the instructions in them for detailed information. Enalapril can be taken with or without food. Always store this medicine in a cool and dry place.
