Kombiglyze XR 5/500 mg is a prescription combination of Saxagliptin and metformin. It is prescribed in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes in adults. Saxagliptin belongs to a class of medications known as dipeptidyl peptidase, which increases insulin release from the pancreas and decreases the hormones that increase sugar levels in the bloodstream. This helps to reduce both fasting and post-meal sugar levels. Metformin belongs to a biguanide class of antidiabetic medicine. It reduces glucose production in the liver, delaying glucose absorption from the intestines and increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin. This combination of antidiabetic medicine, diet, and exercise helps control blood sugar levels.

Consult your doctor before taking Kombiglyze XR 5/1000mg if you have the following:

   — Had gallstones, alcohol independence, or too high levels of triglycerides in your bloodstream

   — A disease of the pancreas

   — Type 1 diabetes. This is sometimes referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes

   — Allergic reaction to Sitagliptin or metformin

   — Taking a sulfonylurea medicine, insulin, or other antidiabetic agents, together with this medicine, as you may experience hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels). Your doctor may advise you to reduce the dose of your sulphonylurea or insulin.

If you need to have major surgery, you must stop taking Kombpiglyze 5/1000 during and after some time of the surgery. Your doctor will decide when you must stop and when to restart the treatment with this medicine.

Follow your doctor’s instructions about using this antidiabetic agent if you are pregnant or you become pregnant. Diabetes management is very important during pregnancy, and having high blood sugar may cause complications in both the mother and the baby. Also, breastfeeding may not be safe while using this antidiabetic drug.

Common side effects of Saxagliptin and metformin include nausea, vomiting, hypoglycaemia, urinary tract infection, and decreased appetite.

Stop taking combination drugs and call your doctor immediately if you develop pancreatitis symptoms. The symptoms of pancreatitis include severe pain in your stomach spreading to your back, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and fast heartbeats. Some people using Kmobiglyze develop lactic acidosis, which can be life-threatening. Get immediate medical help if you even develop mild symptoms such as:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Unusual muscle pain
  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting
  • Irregular heart rate
  • Trouble breathing
  • Feeling cold
  • Lightheaded, feeling dizzy, tired or very weak

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. Talk to your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

Take Kombiglyze XR with food to lower the chance of having an upset stomach. With Saxa gliptin/metformin, the chance of weight gain and low blood sugar is lesser than with other antidiabetic agents. The recommended dose is one tablet orally with meals. You should continue the diet recommended by your doctor during treatment with medicine and ensure that your carbohydrate consumption is equally distributed over the day. Antidiabetic medicine alone is unlikely to cause abnormally low blood sugar. Low blood sugar can occur when this medicine is used with a sulfonylurea medicine or insulin, and your doctor may reduce your dose of the sulfonylurea drug.
