About the drug:

Before you take the drug:

Do not take the drug if you:

Are allergic to the active ingredient Lanthanum Carbonate or any other ingredient of the drug

  • Have a blockage in bowels such as impaction, ileus
  • Are pregnant or planning to be pregnant
  • Are breast feeding your baby

Tell your doctor if you:

  • Have allergy to any medicine
  • Have low phosphate levels
  • Have enlarged colon
  • Have slow-moving bowel tract
  • Have bowel block

Dosage:

How much to take the drug?

The recommended dose will be fixed by the doctor after examining you thoroughly. It depends on several factors including your age, weight, severity of conditions, interactions with other drugs to name a few. Usually, 1500 mg is advised to be taken orally in three divided doses along with meals. The doses can be increased subsequently until an accepted level of serum phosphate is reached. The maximum dose that can be given is 4500 mg per day.

How to take the drug?

The drug should be taken with food. It is chewable tablet that needs to be crushed or chewed and taken with food.

For how long to take it?

The medicine is to be taken for the entire prescribed period and not to be stopped in the mid way. No change in dose should be made or the dose should not be stopped before the prescribed period is over.

Overdose:

An overdose of medicine should be attended immediately. You must consult a doctor if symptoms of overdose such as nausea, headache or vomiting persist for long.

Miss Dose:

In case you miss a dose you can consult your doctor on the next course of action. Usually the missed dose can be taken as soon as you remember it, but it should not be close to the next dose as it may result in an overdose.

Side effects of the drug:

Some of the common side effects of the medicine include stomach upset, belly pain, throwing up, constipation, dyspepsia, and gastrointestinal disturbances.

Such side effects if persists for long needs to be reported to the doctor. Also check with your doctor if the following side effects are observed:
