Thyronorm 75 mcg

Thyronorm 75 mcg containing Levothyroxine as the active ingredient is the standard therapy for patients with hypothyroidism, also called underactive thyroid. Hypothyroidism develops when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones to meet your body’s requirements. The treatment aims to resolve symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism and normalize the circulating thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH levels).

Symptoms of hypothyroidism include cramps, muscle weakness, cold, dry, flaky skin, a deep husky voice, hair loss, tiredness, and weight gain.

Thyronorm 75 mcg should not be given to patients with hypersensitivity to Levothyroxine or other medicine ingredients. The hormone replacement therapy may not be suitable for those with heart attack, acute pancarditis (Inflammation of the heart), and acute myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle). Furthermore, patients with adrenal insufficiency may react unfavourably to this hormone replacement therapy, and it is advised to begin treatment with a corticosteroid before giving Levothyroxine in these cases. Special care is needed for patients with ECG evidence of a heart attack.

In women, long-term use of Thyronorm has been associated with bone resorption, decreasing bone mineral density, especially in post-menopausal women or women receiving suppressive doses of Levothyroxine.

The following side effects indicate excessive drug dosage and usually resolve on dosage reduction or treatment withdrawal for a few days.

   —  Metabolism and nutrition disorders - Increased appetite, excessive weight loss

   —  Immune system condition - Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, pruritus, and anaphylactic reactions.

   —  Nervous system issues - Tremors, headache, seizure. Rarely a condition called benign intracranial hypertension) has been observed, especially in children.

   —  Gastrointestinal disorders - Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps.

   —  Cardiac disorders - Increased blood pressure, chest pain, palpitations,  cardiac arrhythmias,  heart failure, heart attack.

   —  Psychiatric disorders - Nervousness, insomnia, anxiety, excitability, psychotic depression, restlessness.

   —  Skin and tissue disorders - Excessive sweating, hair loss.

   —  Muscle and bone disorders - Muscular weakness, cramps in skeletal muscle.

   —  Reproductive system and breast disorders - menstrual irregularity, impaired fertility.

   —  General conditions - fever, fatigue, heat intolerance.

Report to your doctor if any side effects become troublesome or persist longer.

Appropriate Thyronorm dosage is based on clinical assessment and laboratory monitoring of thyroid function tests. Thyronorm 75 mcg is only prescribed to patients who can swallow the whole tablet. It should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably before breakfast. During the initial dose adjustment, careful dose adjustment and monitoring are required to avoid the consequence of under or over-treatment. The symptoms of an overdose of Thyroxine are the same as many features of thyrotoxicosis (having too much thyroid hormone in your body).

For adults, 50 to 100 mcg of Levothyroxine is recommended at 4 to 6 weeks intervals by 50 mcg until normal metabolism is steadily maintained. The initial dose and dose increments should be carefully done in the elderly and in patients with cardiac symptoms, diabetes, and insipidus (an uncommon issue in which an individual is very thirsty and produces a large amount of urine). With patients over 50 years, exceeding the daily dose of 50 mcg is not advisable. Where there is cardiac disease, the lowest dose on alternative days is more suitable. In such cases, the daily dose may be slowly increased at intervals of perhaps four weeks.
