About the drug:

Clofazimine is the main active pharmaceutical ingredient present in Hansepran capsules. Clofazimine is a fat-soluble riminophenazine dye used in combination with rifampicin and dapsone as a multidrug therapy for the treatment of leprosy.

Uses of the drug:

Clofazimine has a marked anti-inflammatory effect and is given for dapsone resistant leprosy or when patients are intolerant to dapsone to control the leprosy reaction. In combination it has also been employed in the treatment of AIDS patients who are infected with mycobacterium avium and mycobacterium avium paratubercular infection in patients with Crohns disease. This is also useful for treatment of chronic skin ulcer produced by M. Ulcerans.

Working of the drug:

This drug consists of Clofazimine. It is a form of dye which acts as an antileprotic agent & has some anti inflammatory properties also. It exerts a slow bactericidal effect on Mycobacterium leprae or Hansen’s bacillus, this inhibits mycobacterial growth and binds preferentially to mycobacterial DNA. This drug also exerts an anti-inflammatory properties in controlling erythema nodosum leprosum reactions. However, its precise mechanisms of action is unknown.

Do not take the drug if you:

  • Are hypersensitive to this active ingredient Clofazimineor any other ingredient of the medicine

How much to take the drug?

The dosage depends upon your age, weight, medical condition and your response to the treatment. Therefore, your doctor will decide the correct dose. Take the dose exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Never take two 100 mg capsules to substitute one 200 mg capsule.

How to take the drug?

The drug is usually recommended to be taken with the food or after the meal. The tablet is to be swallowed with a glass of water. Do not break or chew the tablet.

For how long to take it?

You should take the dose until you finish the prescription. Do not stop or change the dose even if you feel better. You should complete the prescribed dose.

Miss dose:

If you miss a dose of Clofazimine, then take it as soon as you remember. Never take the missed dose if the next dose time is almost up. Taking multiple doses at almost the same time, can lead to excess medication in your body, which can be harmful.

Side effects of the drug:

Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, weight loss and rash are the common side effects of Clofazimine. If any of these effects continues for a long time or deteriorate, contact your doctor immediately.

Clofazimine may rarely cause serious side effects such as: red-brownish black discoloration of skin, especially areas exposed to sunlight, hair, abdominal pain, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, taste disorders, dryness of the skin, severe abdominal bowel obstruction, decreased tear and sweat production, gastrointestinal bleeding, and splenic infarction.

Common drug interactions:

You must let your doctor know in advance about your medical history and the list of all medications which you may be using, especially these ones: Bedaquiline, Aluminum Hydroxide, Fosphenytoin, Magnesium Hydroxide, Alcohol, and Rifampicin. However, this is not a complete information as mentioning all the details here is quite difficult about this drug. There may be other medications that may cause drug interactions with this medication. Never start a new medication without asking a doctor.

  • Do not share this medicine with anyone else, even if they show similar symptoms as you are having
  • Do not use this medication for any other infection without consulting with the doctor
