About the drug:

Clofazimine is the main active pharmaceutical ingredient present in Hansepran capsules. Clofazimine is a fat-soluble riminophenazine dye used in combination with rifampicin and dapsone as a multidrug therapy for the treatment of leprosy.

Uses of the drug:

Clofazimine has a marked anti-inflammatory effect and is given for dapsone resistant leprosy or when patients are intolerant to dapsone to control the leprosy reaction. In combination it has also been employed in the treatment of AIDS patients who are infected with mycobacterium avium and mycobacterium avium paratubercular infection in patients with Crohns disease. This is also useful for treatment of chronic skin ulcer produced by M. Ulcerans.

Working of the drug:

This drug consists of Clofazimine. It is a form of dye which acts as an antileprotic agent & has some anti inflammatory properties also. It exerts a slow bactericidal effect on Mycobacterium leprae or Hansen’s bacillus, this inhibits mycobacterial growth and binds preferentially to mycobacterial DNA. This drug also exerts an anti-inflammatory properties in controlling erythema nodosum leprosum reactions. However, its precise mechanisms of action is unknown.

Do not take the drug if you:

How to take the drug?

Common drug interactions:

You must let your doctor know in advance about your medical history and the list of all medications which you may be using, especially these ones: Bedaquiline, Aluminum Hydroxide, Fosphenytoin, Magnesium Hydroxide, Alcohol, and Rifampicin.
