Lopid 300 is a useful medication for reducing triglycerides in patients with very high triglyceride serum levels. Each 300 mg capsule contains the active ingredient Gemfibrozil, a lipid-regulating agent which decreases triglycerides and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol and increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. The drug is also approved for decreasing the risk of developing coronary heart disease, particularly in patients with a history of subsisting coronary heart disease symptoms. In addition, Lopid also provides a beneficial effect on patients with an adequate response to dietary measures, weight loss, exercise, and other medications (medicines that are well known to decrease LDL and decrease HDL cholesterol) and in people with a lipid profile consisting of low HDL cholesterol levels, increased LDL cholesterol and increased triglycerides. Diet and exercise constitute the first line of treatment for mild to moderate hypertriglyceridemia.

Lopid 300 mg is contraindicated in the following conditions:

     — Hypersensitivity to Gemfibrozil or any of the other ingredients

     — Pre-existing gallbladder disease

     — Hepatic or renal dysfunction, including primary biliary cirrhosis

     — Type 1 hyperlipoproteinemia

     — Pregnant or lactating patients

The concomitant use of Gemfibrozil wit repaglinide is contraindicated. Caution should be exercised when warfarin is given in conjunction with Lopid 300. The concomitant use of simvastatin is contraindicated. Concomitant therapy with Lopid and an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor decrease is associated with an increased risk of skeletal muscle toxicity.

Dyspepsia was reported in patients taking  Gemfibrozil. The most commonly reported side effects are rash, fatigue, nausea, eczema, diarrhoea, vertigo, atrial fibrillation, abdominal pain, vomiting, and headache. Less frequent side effects are acute appendicitis—rhabdomyolysis, myalgia, taste disturbance,  eosinophilia, cholelithiasis, synovitis,  hypokalemia, angioedema, and flatulence.

Lopid is given orally, thirty minutes before morning and evening meals. If the response to Lopid is incompetent after a month of treatment, it is recommended to suspend Gemfibrozil.

In patients with renal and hepatic impairment, it is recommended to use this medicine with caution. This drug is contraindicated in patients with hepatic impairment and severe renal insufficiency. It is suggested to use Gemfibrozil with caution in pregnant women.

For most effects, stick to your doctor’s advice. Most people with high cholesterol do not feel well, but if you stop taking medicine before the prescribed period, your condition could get worse. This may increase your cholesterol levels and increase your heart disease risk. While taking medicine makes, it is important to check your cholesterol levels regularly.
