What is Nitroglycerin Rectal?
Nitroglycerin Rectal, sold under brands such Nitrogesic Ointment (made by Troikaa Pharma) among several other trade names is a nitrate drug that dilates (widens) blood vessels. Nitroglycerin rectal is mainly prescribed for the treatment of severe pain caused by chronic anal fissures (tears in the skin lining of the rectum).
Important Information about Nitroglycerin Rectal
Do not use Nitroglycerin rectal (Nitrogesic Ointment) if you are allergic to it or to any other nitrate medicine (isosorbide dinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate, other forms of nitroglycerin (oral pill, spray, or skin patch). Also, do not use this medicine if you are taking sildenafil (Viagra or similar products), avanafil, Tadalafil, or vardenafil. Taking these medications with nitroglycerin can cause serious and life threatening side effects. You should also not use Nitroglycerin rectal if you have severe anemia, or a brain injury, hemorrhage, or tumor.
Prior to using Nitroglycerin rectal, inform your doctor if you have congestive heart failure, low blood pressure, glaucoma, liver disease, migraine headaches, or a history of heart attack, stroke, or circulation problems. Do not use this medication without consulting your doctor if you have early symptoms of a heart attack (chest pain or heavy feeling, pain advancing to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, or general ill feeling).
Nitroglycerin is an FDA pregnancy category C drug. It is not known whether this medicine can harm an unborn baby if used during pregnancy. It is also not known if this drug can pass into breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Do not take this medicine without your doctorâ€™s advice if any of these conditions apply to you.
