Uses of the drug:

Before you take this drug:

Do not take this drug if  you:

  • Are allergic to the main ingredient of the drug or to any other ingredients of the drug.

Tell your doctor if you:

  • Have dental problem, low vitamin D, an ulcer or stomach or esophagus problem.
  • Have kidney or liver disease.
  • Are suffering from any other ailments
  • Are taking any other medicine
  • Are allergic to any other medicine

Dosage:

How much to take the drug?

The medicine will be prescribed after examine you thoroughly. It depends on the age, weight, severity of condition, response to treatment, drug interactions and so on. Either the patient can be put on a daily dose or a weekly dose depending on the condition of the patient.

How to take the drug?

The medicine is to be taken with a glass full of water first thing in the morning in an empty stomach. Remember not to eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after taking the medicine. Do not take any other medicines too within 30 minutes of consuming the medicine. Do not lie down immediately after taking the medicine.

For how long to take it?

The medicine is to be taken exactly for the prescribed period of time as mentioned by your doctor and should not be stopped in between without his consultation. Usually the medicine is taken for long periods ranging from 3 to 5 years.

Overdose:

In case of overdose of medicine you must get medical help as soon as you can. Overdose of the medicine should be avoided as it can lead to several side effects such as stomach pain, heartburn, diarrhoea, muscle cramps, nausea, numbness or tingling, seizure, muscle tightness in your face, irritability and so on.

Miss dose:

Missed dose should be taken as soon as you remember provided the next dose is not close. Do not double dose to compensate for the missed dose.

Warning:

Things to remember:

  • Store the medicine in a cool and dry place away from heat, light and moisture and away from the reach of children.
  • Do not consume any other medications especially multi-minerals, multi-vitamins or antacids  within 30 minutes of taking Sodium Alendronate tablet as this may result in less absorption of the medicine in the body.
  • Do not lie down immediately and sit upright at least 30 minutes after taking the medicine.
  • Do not share the medicine with anyone even if the person is suffering from the same symptoms.
  • Use the medicine only for the purpose mentioned and not for any other purpose.
  • Regular checkups are essential to monitor the progress.

Do not take Osteofos 70 mg if any of the following applies to you:

 

   — Can’t stand or sit upright for at least half an hour

   — Have certain problems with your oesophagus, the tube that joins your mouth with your stomach

   — Are you allergic to Sodium alendronate or any of the ingredients of the medicine

   — Have low levels in your blood

 

Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including any of the following:

   — Have kidney problems

   — Have stomach or digestive problems

   — Have leukaemia, sarcoidosis, and lymphoma. These conditions may cause changes in vitamin D

   — Have issues with swallowing

   — Are you pregnant or planning to conceive

   — Are breastfeeding

 

Let your doctor know about all medicines, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, minerals, and herbal supplements. Take medicine while you are standing or sitting. Swallow the pill with a glass full of water. Do not take the tablet with mineral water, coffee, or juice. Do not chew or break the tablet.

 

After swallowing the tablet, wait for at least half an hour before you:

   — Lie down; you may sit, stand or walk and indulge in normal activities like reading or singing.

   — Consume your first food or drink except plain water

   — Take other medicines, including calcium, antacids, and other supplements and vitamins.

 

Try not to lie down until after your first food of the day. Keep taking medicine for as long as your doctor asks you to take it. For this osteoporosis medicine to continue to work, you need to keep taking it.

   — Osteofos 70 mg may cause problems in your oesophagus. These problems include inflammation, irritation, or ulcers of the oesophagus, which may sometimes bleed. This is more likely to happen, especially if you do not drink a full glass of water with Sodium alendronate or lie down in less than 30 minutes or before your first food of the day.

   — Discontinue treatment and call your doctor right away if you get signs of possible serious issues with the oesophagus. These include chest pain, new or worsening heartburn, and difficulty swallowing.

   — Problems associated with the oesophagus may worsen if you take Osteofos tablets.

   — Mouth sores may occur if this osteoporosis drug is chewed or dissolved in the mouth.

   — You may get allergic reactions. Symptoms include hives and swelling of your face/lips/tongue/throat.

   — Osteofos may cause problems with the jawbone. These problems may include infection and delayed healing after teeth are pulled.

 

Inform your doctor about any side effect that doesn’t resolve or bothers you.  

Select one day of the week that best fits your schedule. Take one tablet every week on your selected day after you get up for the day and before having your first meal of the day. Talk to your doctor if you have any doubts about using the medicine.
