The main active ingredient of Efavir 200 mg is Efavirenz, is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase Inhibitors, used actively against HIV or AIDS virus. HIV medicine is quite useful in reducing the discomfort and severity of AIDS, and it is an important part of antiretroviral therapy. Efavirenz is an antiviral drug that prevents HIV from multiplying in your body. This medication is prescribed for the treatment of HIV, which causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS. The medicine directly attacks the multiplication mechanism of the virus. It binds and blocks reverse transcriptase enzyme of HIV and prevents the proper transcription of the viral DNA. Women should avoid taking hormone-based birth control pills because your HIV treatment regimen may make these contraceptives less effective. Women may switch to some other types of contraceptives such as condom or diaphragm. Do not breastfeed if you are taking Efavirenz tablets as these can pass the HIV through breast milk to the baby. Taking this medicine with alcohol may increase your risk of developing drowsiness. Also, do start taking any other drug without checking with your doctor, including all those herbal supplements and vitamins.

Side Effects

A small number of patients receiving Efavir 200 mg may witness strange thoughts, angry behaviour, or severe depression. Some patients tend to develop suicidal behaviour while receiving the anti-HIV drug. This problem is more likely to occur in patients who have had a mental illness. Other common side effects of the medicine are trouble sleeping, drowsiness, unusual dreams, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating. Tell your doctor straight away if you notice any unwanted effects while using Efavirenz tablets.

How to Use

Efavir 200 mg is a prescription medicine used in combination with other drugs to help treat the infection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), the virus that contributes to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). You should take the HIV medication on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime. Swallow the tablet with water without breaking it. Taking Efavirenz with food increases the amount of medicine in your body, which may make you more prone to side effects.

Taking HIV medicine at bedtime may make you less likely to witness side effects. You may be asked to take Efavirenz tablet in combination with other anti-HIV drugs. If you take Efavir tablet alone, it may not work. Take the exact amount of medication your doctor prescribes. Do not change the dose without having words with your doctor. Do not stop the treatment unless your doctor tells you to stop. Your doctor may ask you to take the tablet once daily to prevent multiplication of virus in the body.
