Flurisone 0.1% eye drops are an ophthalmic solution used to treat inflammation, swelling, redness, or irritation. It is prescribed for the short-term management of inflammation, especially that which follows surgery or injury. It contains Fluorometholone, a synthetic corticosteroid, as its active ingredient. Fluorometholone belongs to a class of medications known as glucocorticoids, which are famous for their anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. The ophthalmic medicine works by reducing the production of substances in the body that cause inflammation, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This helps in reducing redness, swelling, pain, and discomfort caused by inflammation.
Flurisone 0.1% is mainly used for:
‒ Post-operative inflammation - To reduce swelling and discomfort after eye surgery, such as
cataract extraction.
‒ Eye injuries or trauma - To reduce inflammation due to mechanical or chemical irritation.
It is advised not to use it against infections and should not be used in cases of viral, bacterial, or fungal eye infections unless combined with appropriate antimicrobial treatment.
Things to remember while using Fluorometholone eye drops
Avoid long-term use as extended use of corticosteroid eye drops increases the risk of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), cataract formation and delayed wound healing. If using the drop for more than 10 days, monitor your IOP regularly. This drop may suppress the immune response, masking signs of infection. Before you use this eye drop, let your ophthalmologist know if you are allergic to Fluorometholone or any other ingredient of the eye drops. Before using this ophthalmic preparation, you must inform your ophthalmologist of your medical history, especially of contact lenses. You may experience unstable vision for some time after applying the drug. Avoid driving a vehicle or performing tasks that require alertness, such as machine work.
Pregnancy and Lactation - There is limited data on the safety of Fluorometholone during pregnancy and lactation. It should be used under the strict guidance of physicians during pregnancy.
Contact lenses should be avoided during treatment unless specifically advised to do so by a doctor. The drops may cause lens discolouration or irritation.
Side effects of Fluorometholone eye drops
It is generally well tolerated when used as directed. Still, some patients may experience side effects
such as temporary blurred vision after application, eye irritation, dryness, redness or itching. There are some serious side effects, such as increased eye pressure, glaucoma, cataract formation, and secondary ocular infections. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the serious side effects mentioned below.
How to use Fluorometholone eye drops?
Flurisone 0.1% eye drops provide effective relief from redness, inflammation, and allergies. However, it must be used judiciously and under medical supervision due to potential unwanted effects, especially with long-term use. Follow your eye care provider's instructions closely, attend follow-up appointments for pressure checks, and report any unusual symptoms promptly. This ensures both effective treatment and the safe preservation of your vision. The prescribing ophthalmologist determines the dosage and duration of Flurisone treatment based on the severity of the disorders.
Dosages
‒ Adults - Administer 1-2 drops every 2-4 hours in the affected eye(s). In severe cases, the dosage may be increased to 1 drop every 2 hours, followed by a gradual tapering schedule.
‒ Children - It has not been extensively studied in pediatric populations. Use only under medical supervision for children.
Usage information:
‒ Clean your hands before using the drops. Shake the bottle well before use. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and place the prescribed drops in the eye. Gently close the eye and press the inner corner for 1-2 minutes to prevent drainage into the tear duct. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination. If you are using any other ophthalmic formulation, wait for at least 5 minutes before applying additional drops.
