Kombiglyze XR5/1000 mg is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in adults with Type 2 diabetes. It contains two different medicines called sitagliptin and metformin. Sitagliptin is categorized under the class of drugs known as DPP-4 inhibitors, whereas metformin belongs to a class of drugs known as biguanides. Both medicines control blood sugar levels in adults with Type 2 diabetes. This combination of medicine helps to increase the levels of insulin released after a meal and reduces the amount of sugar your body makes. Along with diet and exercise, the medicine helps to control blood sugar levels. The combination of antidiabetic agents can be used alone or with certain other medicines for diabetes (such as sulphonylureas, insulin, or glitazones).
Do not take Kombiglyze XR if you have/are:
— Allergic to sitagliptin/metformin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
— Uncontrolled diabetes
— Severely reduced kidney function
— A severe infection or are dehydrated
— Liver problems
— Recently had a heart attack or have severe circulatory problems such as shock and breathing difficulties
— Drink alcohol in excess
You should not take this medicine if any of the above applies to you, and discuss with your doctor the other ways of managing diabetes.
Patients taking Kombiglyze reported having an inflammation of the pancreas, medically termed pancreatitis. If you experience blistering of the skin, it may indicate bullous pemphigoid. Your doctor advised discontinuing treatment.
Discontinue treatment for a short time if you have a medical condition associated with dehydration, such as fever, diarrhoea, severe vomiting, exposure to heat, or If you consume less liquid than normal. Speak to your doctor for further instructions.
Discontinue treatment and contact a doctor immediately if you experience some of the symptoms of lactic acidosis, as this condition may lead to a coma. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include muscle cramps, stomach aches, difficulty breathing, vomiting, reduced body temperature, and a general feeling of not being well with severe tiredness.
If you need to have major surgery, you must stop taking Kombpiglyze 5/1000 during and after some time of the surgery. Your doctor will decide when you must stop and when to restart the treatment with this medicine.
Common side effects of Kombiglyze XR 5/1000 mg include low blood sugar, swelling of the hand or legs, headache, stuffy or runny nose, upper respiratory infection, osteoarthritis, sore throat, or arm or leg pain, stomachache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and metallic taste. If you get any side effects, speak to your doctor. Get immediate medical help if you develop signs of an allergic reaction. These include itching, hives, peeling skin, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, or throat.
Always take Kombiglyze exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor if you are unsure how to take medicine. Take one tablet twice daily orally with meals to lower your chance of an upset stomach. Your doctor may need to increase the as per your condition to control your blood sugar. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose if you have any renal impairment.
