Oncotrex 5 mg contains the active component methotrexate, an antimetabolite and immunosuppressant that affects the reproduction of the body’s cells and reduces the activity of the immune system. It is indicated for the treatment of active rheumatoid arthritis in adult patients. It treats severe resistant disabling psoriasis, which is not adequately responsive to other therapies such as phototherapy or PUVA.
Oncotrex is effective in treating severe psoriatic arthritis in adult patients. Methotrexate is usually used for patients who have tried other treatments but whose illnesses have not improved. It helps patients with psoriasis by destroying the cells in the rapidly growing skin. These fast-growing cells cause raised patches of psoriasis. In treating rheumatoid arthritis, Oncotrex is used to stop or reduce inflammation in the joints by affecting the body’s defence mechanism in the immune system.
Oncotrex 5 mg is not recommended for use in children. Do not take this medicine if you have kidney disease, liver disease, bone marrow disease, impaired immune system, inflammation of ulcers in your mouth, gastrointestinal ulcers, or serious blood disorders.
You should not use Oncotrex tablets if allergic to its active ingredient, Methotrexate, or other medicine components. Women using this medicine should use contraception or encourage their sexual partners too. If you plan to start a family, speak to your doctor as soon as possible. You shouldn’t take Oncotrex if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, as it can affect how an unborn baby develops. The medicine should be stopped three months after becoming pregnant. If you become pregnant during the treatment, you must speak to your doctor immediately. You shouldn’t breastfeed if you are taking methotrexate tablets as the medicine can pass into the breast milk, and we don’t yet know what effects this could have on a baby. Your doctor may ask you to return to methotrexate therapy after breastfeeding.
Other medications may affect the safety and effectiveness of Methotrexate; therefore, it is important to tell your doctor, especially if you are using certain antibiotics, diuretics, medicines for lowering blood sugar, anticonvulsants, folic acid, anticancer agents, medicines to stop stomach acid, sleeping injection, oral contraceptives, retinoids for psoriasis, etc.
Very common side effects associated with the use of Oncotrex include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dyspepsia, nausea, loss of appetite, an increase in liver enzymes, inflammation of the throat, sore mouth and lips, diarrhoea, drowsiness, headache, dizziness, hair loss, mouth ulcers, etc. If you get side effects, speak to your doctor.
Take Oncoterx 5 mg tablet once a week. Patients who have rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or psoriasis will usually have their tablets once a week. Do not take more of this medicine than your doctor has told you. Daily use can contribute to serious side effects, including death. Take the tablets with a glass full of water while sitting or standing. Oncotrex should not be taken every day for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medicine, as it increases the risk of liver damage.
