Osteofos is a fixed-dose combination tablet containing 70 mg of sodium alendronate. It is intended as a once-weekly treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. It increases bone mass and prevents fractures, including those of the hip and spine.
Do not take Osteofos 70 mg if any of the following applies to you:
— Can’t stand or sit upright for at least half an hour
— Have certain problems with your oesophagus, the tube that joins your mouth with your stomach
— Are you allergic to Sodium alendronate or any of the ingredients of the medicine
— Have low levels in your blood
Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including any of the following:
— Have kidney problems
— Have stomach or digestive problems
— Have leukaemia, sarcoidosis, and lymphoma. These conditions may cause changes in vitamin D
— Have issues with swallowing
— Are you pregnant or planning to conceive
— Are breastfeeding
Let your doctor know about all medicines, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, minerals, and herbal supplements. Take medicine while you are standing or sitting. Swallow the pill with a glass full of water. Do not take the tablet with mineral water, coffee, or juice. Do not chew or break the tablet.
After swallowing the tablet, wait for at least half an hour before you:
— Lie down; you may sit, stand or walk and indulge in normal activities like reading or singing.
— Consume your first food or drink except plain water
— Take other medicines, including calcium, antacids, and other supplements and vitamins.
Try not to lie down until after your first food of the day. Keep taking medicine for as long as your doctor asks you to take it. For this osteoporosis medicine to continue to work, you need to keep taking it.
— Osteofos 70 mg may cause problems in your oesophagus. These problems include inflammation, irritation, or ulcers of the oesophagus, which may sometimes bleed. This is more likely to happen, especially if you do not drink a full glass of water with Sodium alendronate or lie down in less than 30 minutes or before your first food of the day.
— Discontinue treatment and call your doctor right away if you get signs of possible serious issues with the oesophagus. These include chest pain, new or worsening heartburn, and difficulty swallowing.
— Problems associated with the oesophagus may worsen if you take Osteofos tablets.
— Mouth sores may occur if this osteoporosis drug is chewed or dissolved in the mouth.
— You may get allergic reactions. Symptoms include hives and swelling of your face/lips/tongue/throat.
— Osteofos may cause problems with the jawbone. These problems may include infection and delayed healing after teeth are pulled.
Inform your doctor about any side effect that doesn’t resolve or bothers you.
