Acnedap gel 5% is a topical prescription medicine applied to the skin to treat acne vulgaris. It is used to treat acne in people 12 years of age and older. Acnedap effectively helps treat acne on the face, back, shoulders, and chest. It contains an antibacterial component called Dapsone, and it should be used exactly as directed by the dermatologist. Dapsone is an anti-inflammatory synthetic sulpha medicine that has long been used orally in treating many dermatological conditions. It has been used in the treatment of nodulocystic acne (a severe form of acne that involves painful and inflamed cysts and nodules beneath the skin's surface) prior to the use of a retinoid formulation. It has not been studied in children under 12 years of age. Dapsone works by stopping the production of acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes), thereby ceasing their growth.

Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce redness and swelling associated with acne. The topical formulation of Dapsone 5% has a better safety profile and can be used for acne, along with other chronic cutaneous diseases. The 5% gel has been found to be safe and effective enough in the treatment of inflammatory pimples. The twice-daily use of topical 5% Acnedap in treating mild to moderate acne can provide significant improvement in the appearance of acne. Misuse or overuse of this antibacterial medicine may contribute to the growth of bacteria that Dapsone does not destroy. This means that Acnedap or other topical medications containing the same active component may not work for you in future.

To lower the risk associated with the occurrence of medicine-resistant bacteria and to preserve the effectiveness of Dapsone, it should only be used for the indications for which it's clinically approved. Using it for conditions not intended for, increases the risk of bacteria developing resistance to the antiacne medicine.

Precautions to keep in mind while using Dapsone gel

Patients should report the following before using the Acnedap formulation:

  • History of anaemia or an enzyme deficiency
  • Allergy to Dapsone or any of the formulation's ingredients.
  • Any signs of adverse reactions

In a clinical trial, the safety and effectiveness were evaluated in children aged 12 to 17 years old who were treated with Acnedap gel. Therefore, the product should not be used in paediatric patients less than 12 years of age.

The gel formulation may not be safe to use during pregnancy, although there is no evidence to show harmful effects on the developing baby. Your healthcare provider will weigh the benefits and any potential risks associated with its use before prescribing it to you. Although the absorption of topical Dapsone is minimal compared to the oral formulation, it is known that the pharmaceutical agent is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential for the gel preparation to cause undesired effects in nursing infants, a decision should be made by the dermatologist whether the medication needs to be prescribed or to discontinue breastfeeding for some time.

Topical application of Dapsone followed by benzoyl peroxide in patients with acne vulgaris resulted in localised yellow or orange skin discolouration of the skin and facial hair. Concomitant use with medications that cause Methemoglobinemia (a condition of increased methemoglobin in the bloodstream). Protect the gel formulation from freezing and light. The safety and effectiveness of this product have not been established in patients over 65 years of age.

Side effects of Dapsone gel

In general, Dapsone formulation is safe and well-tolerated by most patients who use it for treating acne. Regular application, as advised by the dermatologist, yields effective results with minimal risk of adverse reactions. However, like any other medicinal product, Acnedap 5% can cause unwanted effects, which include oiliness, dryness, peeling, erythema, and swelling of the face, lips, and eyes. These side effects are typically mild and usually subside with a few days of regular application.

Seek medical help if any side effects become troublesome or do not resolve. Dapsone, the active component of the medicine, have been related to blood abnormalities, usually associated with oral administration. Topical application on the skin does not result in sufficient product absorption into the blood, which can cause abnormalities; however, these have not been observed in research trials. Also mentioned above, Methemoglobinemia has been reported in association with the use of Acnedap 5%.

One should be cautious of the symptoms suggestive of these medical conditions (anaemia, low white blood cells, and Methemoglobinemia) and follow the instructions given by your healthcare professional if you experience them.

Usage instructions for Dapsone gel

Patients should use Acnedap gel 5% as instructed by their dermatologist. The product is for topical use only. One should not use this topical medicine for any condition other than that for which it is prescribed. Generally, Dapsone gel should be used once in the morning and once in the evening. A pea-sized amount of the product is usually enough to cover the affected skin area. If you think you need more information to apply, discuss it with your dermatologist. Ensure the gel formulation does not come into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth. In case you develop excessive redness or peeling, contact your dermatologist. If no improvement is seen after 12 weeks of treatment, treatment with Acnedap should be reassessed.

This product is not for oral use; therefore, if oral ingestion occurs, seek immediate medical advice. If you missed applying the product, apply as soon as possible. Regular application is essential to maintain a consistent amount of medication on the skin. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled application, skip the missed application and follow the regular application regimen.
