Aldactone (spironolactone) is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt and keeps your potassium levels from getting too low. This drug is used to treat a condition when the aldosterone level in the blood becomes extremely high. The aldosterone hormone is necessary to regulate the balance of salt and water levels in the blood.
There are various uses of Aldactone 25 mg specifically for the treatment of heart-related ailments. Here are a few common uses of the drug:
-Prevents loss of excessive potassium: too much of aldosterone in the blood increases amounts of sodium and water to be retained by the kidneys, while too much potassium is removed from the body
- Treatment of hypertension
- Treatment of edematous disorders (swelling with fluid), including congestive cardiac failure
- Diagnosis and treatment of primary aldosteronism
- Treatment of Hirsutism in females
Doses of Aldactone in children are measured according to body weight and is calculated by the doctor. Do not take Aldactone with potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes. Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of Aldactone. Avoid a diet high in salt. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise or hot weather.
