About the drug:
Brimonidine is a relatively selective alpha II adrenergic agonist for ophthalmic use. It is prescribed to reduce the pressure in the eye in patients with ocular hypertension and glaucoma. The drug works by reducing pressure with the eyeball.
Uses of the drug:
Brimonidine is used to reduce raised intraocular pressure in individuals with chronic open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It may be used alone or in combination with other eye solution that reduces pressure in the eye.
Working of the drug:
The Brimonidine ophthalmic solution works by reducing the amount of fluid flowing into the eye and increasing the amount of fluid flowing out of the eye. It reduces the pressure inside the eye.

The drug is available in the form of eye drops in the following strengths:

Before you take the drug:
Do not take the drug if you:
- You are allergic to Brimonodine tartrate, or other inactive components of the solution
Tell your doctor if you:
- Are pregnant or a nursing woman
- Have vascular insufficiency
- Have cardiovascular disease
How much to take the drug?
Instill one drop of a Brimonidine eye drops thrice daily in the affected eye, approximately 8 hours apart.
How to take the drug?
The medicine should be applied in the lower eyelid sac without touching the vial tip or the dropper. Do not let your fingers touch the dropper or tube as this will contaminate the medicine.
For how long to take it?
The medicine should not be used for longer than the recommended period. Use it till the period, it is prescribed.
In case of an overdose of the Brimonidine ophthalmic solution, call your doctor immediately, or get emergency medical help.
If you miss a dose of Brimonidine eye drops, use it as soon as you remember it, but if it is within few hours of the next scheduled dose, wait and use it at the regular time. Avoid doubling up a dose as this can be toxic to you.
Side effects of the drug:
Contact your doctor if you experience any unwanted effect while taking the drug. The following are the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine:
- Allergic conjunctivitis
- Visual disturbance
- Oral dryness
- Ocular allergic reaction
- Eye pruritus
- Stinging sensation

Common drug interactions:
The ingredients present in the eye drop can interact with other medicines and other eye drops, thus make sure you do not start any medicine while using it. - CNS depressants
- Antihypertensive glycosides
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
- Tricyclic antidepressants
Things to remember:
- To avoid the potential for contamination and eye injury, be careful while using the preparation; do not allow the vial tip to touch your eye
- The safety and efficacy of this eye drop solution have not been established in infants, therefore, it should not be used in this population.
- The medicine should be stored away from children and household pets. Do not refrigerate it.
