Enapril is an ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor drug. It is prescribed primarily for treating hypertension (high blood pressure), congestive heart failure and improving the chances of survival after a heart attack.

Enalapril (main salt composition) is also prescribed to treat a disorder of the ventricles (the heart's lower chambers that allow blood to flow out of the heart). This disorder can decrease the heart’s ability to pump blood into the body. Enapril may also be given for conditions not mentioned here.

Do not take Enapril if you are allergic to it, have ever had angioedema, or have an allergy to any other ACE inhibitor such as ramipril, captopril, fosinopril, benazepril, moexipril, and others.

To ensure this medicine is safe, inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions:

Congestive heart failure, kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis), liver disease, diabetes, or a history of blood clots or stroke. If you have diabetes or kidney disease, you may not be able to take this medicine if you also take a blood pressure medicine with aliskiren. Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may cause too much body water loss and increase the risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance while taking Enalapril. Ensure that you consume plenty of fluids. Enalapril can cause kidney problems. Notify your doctor immediately if you have swelling, rapid weight gain, little or no urinating, or breathlessness.

Enalapril is a pregnancy category D drug. Do not take it if you are a pregnant or breastfeeding woman. If you become pregnant during the treatment with this medicine, stop taking it and talk to your doctor.

If you are being treated for high blood pressure, continue taking Enalapril even if you don’t have any symptoms. High blood pressure doesn’t have any outward signs. You may have to take this medicine for many years.

Things and Activities to avoid while taking Enalapril

Avoid alcohol as consuming alcohol further lowers blood pressure. Also, avoid activities which require a high level of mental awareness and reflexes (such as driving). Enalapril may increase your potassium levels. Hence, avoid potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium while taking this medicine.

Many other drugs can interact with Enalapril. Let your doctor know in advance if you use any medicine or supplements.

Some common side effects of Enalapril are dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, or headache. If any of these effects persist or deteriorate, get medical attention immediately. A serious side effect is unlikely. However, visit your doctor if you get any serious side effects due to elevated potassium levels (fast, irregular or rapid heartbeat, muscle weakness), fainting, decreased urination, or any other serious side effect.

Enalapril dosage may depend on a range of factors like age, sex, drug allergies, or seriousness of the condition, among several other factors. Your doctor will determine your dosage after examining you properly. Remember to follow his advice properly for the best results.

Do not alter the dosage unless recommended. Also, do not take this medication after the prescribed period is over. All medications come with a patient leaflet. Refer to the instructions in them for detailed information. Enalapril can be taken with or without food. Always store this medicine in a cool and dry place.

What is Enapril 5mg used for?

Enapril 5mg contains Enalapril Maleate 5mg and is used as both a starting dose for uncomplicated hypertension and the second step in the heart failure up-titration protocol (from 2.5mg twice daily to 5mg twice daily). It provides meaningful blood pressure reduction and ACE inhibitor protection at a dose tolerated by most patients, including those who have recently started ACE inhibitor therapy.

How effective is Enapril 5mg for controlling blood pressure?

Enalapril 5mg once daily reduces systolic blood pressure by approximately 6–10 mmHg in adults with mild-to-moderate hypertension. For many patients, the maintenance dose will be 10mg or 20mg, but 5mg is sufficient for mild hypertension or as an initiation dose. The antihypertensive effect is continuous over 24 hours when taken once daily, due to Enalapril's 11-hour half-life. Twice-daily dosing provides more even 24-hour coverage.

What is the dosing schedule for Enapril 5mg?

For hypertension, Enapril 5mg is taken once daily, at the same time each day. After two to four weeks, the dose may be increased to 10mg if blood pressure remains above target. For heart failure, 5mg is the second titration step taken twice daily (total 10mg per day). The exact schedule depends on the indication. Take with or without food — food does not significantly affect Enalapril absorption.

Can Enapril 5mg be used in patients with microalbuminuria?

Yes. ACE inhibitors at any dose provide nephroprotective benefits in patients with diabetic nephropathy or non-diabetic proteinuric CKD. At 5mg, Enalapril begins to reduce intraglomerular pressure and proteinuria. Higher doses (10–20mg) achieve greater renoprotection. For most patients with diabetic nephropathy, the target is at least 10mg — 5mg is used as a starting or intermediate dose on the way to the target.

Is Enapril 5mg safe for patients with bilateral renal artery stenosis?

No. Bilateral renal artery stenosis is a contraindication to ACE inhibitors, including Enapril 5mg. In bilateral RAS, angiotensin II is required to maintain GFR in both kidneys by constricting the efferent arteriole. Blocking ACE in this setting causes acute and severe renal failure. If unilateral RAS is suspected, use ACE inhibitors with extreme caution and close monitoring of creatinine and GFR.

Can Enapril 5mg be used with potassium supplements?

No — avoid potassium supplements unless specifically prescribed to counteract hypokalaemia caused by concomitant diuretics. Enalapril raises serum potassium by reducing aldosterone. Adding potassium supplements risks hyperkalaemia (dangerously high potassium), which can cause life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Monitor potassium levels when any changes to the medication regimen involve ACE inhibitors.

Is Enapril 5mg the same as Vasotec 5mg?

Yes. Enapril 5mg contains Enalapril Maleate 5mg, identical to the active ingredient in Vasotec 5mg. Vasotec is the Bausch Health originator brand. Generic Enapril 5mg provides the same blood pressure lowering and cardiac/renal protective effects at a significantly lower price. AllDayChemist offers Enapril 5mg from a manufacturer-direct supply chain at accessible international prices.

Is generic Enalapril 5mg reliable for long-term use?

Yes. Generic Enalapril has been used globally for decades by tens of millions of patients with hypertension, heart failure, and CKD. Bioequivalence to Vasotec is confirmed by regulatory agencies. The profound mortality evidence from the CONSENSUS and SOLVD trials applies equally to generic Enalapril formulations. AllDayChemist's manufacturer-direct sourcing ensures the quality of Enapril 5mg.

Is Enapril 5mg available at AllDayChemist?

Free international shipping on qualifying orders, discreet packaging, and dedicated customer support make it the preferred pharmacy for long-term ACE inhibitor therapy.

What side effects does Enapril 5mg cause?

Common side effects of Enapril 5mg include dry persistent cough (10–20% of patients), dizziness (especially after the first dose), elevated serum potassium, elevated creatinine, headache, and fatigue. Angioedema — though rare at any dose — is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate discontinuation and emergency medical care. Monitor blood pressure after the first dose, particularly in volume-depleted patients.

What key warnings apply to Enapril 5mg?

Never use in pregnancy — Enalapril causes fetal renal failure, oligohydramnios, and neonatal death in the second and third trimesters. Previous angioedema from any ACE inhibitor is an absolute contraindication. Do not combine with aliskiren if the patient has diabetes or CKD. Avoid NSAIDs for pain — use paracetamol. Monitor potassium and kidney function after initiating and at each dosing change. Inform your anaesthetist before surgery.
