Heximar B 15gm ointment contains Calcipotriol and Betamethasone, two active ingredients in the medicine. Both are used to treat psoriasis with different modes of action. The first active ingredient, Calcipotriol, is a synthetic form of vitamin D, whereas Betamethasone, the second active constituent, belongs to the corticosteroids class. Both ingredients are combined and are available in the form of a topical medicine called Heximar B.

The combination of Calcipotriol and Betamethasone is indicated for treating psoriasis in patients 12 years of age and older. The medicine is available for use on the skin under the brand name Heximar B-15 gm.

Betamethasone works to decrease the activity of certain chemicals in the body that cause redness, swelling, and itching and relieves psoriasis-associated symptoms.

Calcipotriol works by lowering the rates with which skin cell grows, thereby controlling psoriasis.

Heximar-B and other drugs can interact with each other. To avoid this interaction, tell your doctor about the following medicines you are using:

      Other medicines for psoriasis

      Other corticosteroid drugs

Things to remember:

Never cover the treated area with bandages or other clothes

Avoid exposure to sunlight during the treatment after applying the ointment. Use sunscreen before an outing and inform your doctor in case you get sunburn.

Store the Heximar tube at room temperature. Make sure that the tube is tightly closed.

Do not take the drug if you:

Have thin skin at the site to be treated

Are you allergic to the ingredients present in this combination drug

Also, inform your doctor if any of these conditions apply to you:

      Have a calcium metabolism disease

Getting light therapy for your psoriasis

Pregnant or plan to become pregnant

      A nursing mother

      Have a skin infection

Have exfoliative psoriasis, pustular, or erythrodermic psoriasis

The commonly experienced side effects include itching and rash. Some other less common side effects of the medicine include skin irritation, thinning of the skin, burning, redness, swollen fine blood vessels, change of skin color, rash with pus-filled pimples, and folliculitis.

Heximar is a prescription ointment and should be used after consulting a doctor. Patients above 18 years or older are advised not to use more than 100 gm in one week, and patients between 12 to 17 years of age can use 60 grams of the cream per week.

Apply the ointment once daily to the affected areas of your skin. Rub it gently so the medicine gets absorbed into the skin.

Use this ointment for as long as your doctor asks you to use it. The medicine is recommended for up to four weeks. Do not use it for more than four weeks unless your doctor tells you to.
