Istavel 100 mg tablet is an oral medication for treating type 2 diabetes. It is recommended together with a balanced diet and regular exercise to control blood sugar levels in the body. It is usually recommended alone or in combination with other medicines that treat diabetes. This medicine is not recommended to treat type 1 diabetes. Istavel helps prevent serious health complications of diabetes, such as kidney failure and vision blindness.

Sitagliptin 100mg (DPP-4 inhibitors) is the main active ingredient (salt) of Istavel. It is marketed as a salt of phosphate under various brand names. It is one of the most effective medicines for controlling diabetes by regulating blood sugar levels.

This medicine is available in varying strengths, including 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg. Ask your doctor for the right dosage you need.

How does Sitagliptin 100mg tablet work?

Istavel Sitagliptin works by lowering high blood glucose (hyperglycemia). This medicine increases the secretion of insulin and suppresses the release of glucagon by the pancreas. This drives the blood glucose levels to normal levels. As soon as the blood glucose levels become normal, the increased changes in insulin and glucagon stop, further preventing the hypoglycemic situation.

The usual starting dose for adults is one 100 mg tablet once a day; however, the drug dosage varies from person to person.

Precautions with Sitagliptin 100mg tablet

You should not take Istavel 100 mg if you are hypersensitive to Sitagliptin or other component of the drug. Pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas has been reported in patients receiving Istavel.

Before taking Sitagliptin, inform your doctor if you have ever had:

‒    Pancreatitis- a disease of the pancreas

     ‒    Type 1 diabetes

‒    Any past or present kidney problems

‒    An allergic reaction to Sitagliptin

‒    Diabetic ketoacidosis- a complication associated with diabetes, often accompanied by high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, and rapid weight loss.

‒    Gallstones, alcohol dependence, or excessively high levels of triglycerides in your bloodstream

Istavel is less likely to cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) because it does not work when your blood sugar is too low. However, hypoglycemia episodes may occur when this drug is combined with insulin or sulfonylurea medicine. Your doctor may prescribe a reduced dose of insulin or sulfonylurea.

Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicine. In particular, if you are taking digoxin, which is used to treat irregular heartbeat and other heart diseases. The level of digoxin in your bloodstream may need to be checked if taken with Sitagliptin tablets.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor for advice before taking this antidiabetic agent. You should avoid taking this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it is unknown if it passes into breast milk.

Possible drug interactions

As the drug is associated with weight loss, ask your doctor about the intake of cholesterol and diabetes drugs. The following drugs may interact with Sitagliptin:

     ‒    Ivacaftor

     ‒    Probenecid

     ‒    Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

     ‒    Aspirin or other salicylates

     ‒    Sulfa drugs

     ‒    Monoamine oxidase inhibitors

     ‒    Beta-blockers

Ask your doctor to get the full list of drugs that need to be avoided while taking this medicine. Also, tell him about any herbal or OTC medicine you are currently taking or have taken. Never start a new medicine without consulting your doctor.
