Otrivin Oxy Adult Nasal Spray 0.05% (10ml) is a prescription medicine for application in the nose to provide relief from nasal congestion (blocked nose, including colds), perennial and allergic rhinitis (recurring inflammation of the nasal mucous membranes, including hay fever), and sinusitis.

The nasal drop contains the active ingredient Xylometazoline, which helps to unblock and clear the nasal passages by decreasing excessive nasal secretions and causing the swollen blood vessels to return to their normal size. Xylometazoline relieves symptoms of nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. The intranasal application lasts up to ten hours in case of nasal congestion. For short-term use, it is considered well-tolerated and is associated with a few nasal adverse effects. Intranasal use of Xylometazoline is considered safe regardless of the level of blood pressure, even though it belongs to a group of vasoconstrictors.

Precautions

Precautions (warning, allergy, things to remember)

Do not use Otrivin Oxy Adult spray if you have a history of sensitivity to Xylometazoline or any other ingredients in the medicine. Avoid using this nasal drop if you are allergic to decongestants. The medication should not be used in patients who have had neurosurgery. Do not use this nasal drop for children under twelve years old. Tell your healthcare provider before using these drops if you have glaucoma, heart or circulatory disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, an overactive thyroid gland, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Like other products used for relieving a blocked nose, Otrivin can cause sleep disturbances and tremors in sensitive individuals. Consult your healthcare professional if these symptoms have become bothersome to you. Also, please let your healthcare specialist know before using this nasal drop if you have recently taken any medicines, especially monoamine oxidase inhibitors (ex-, phenelzine, tranylcypromine) or other antidepressants, including those brought without a prescription. Taking these nasal drops with certain other medicines may cause an increase in blood pressure and is not recommended. These include blood pressure tablets (e.g., beta blockers such as propranolol and metoprolol).

Like all pharmaceutical agents, Otrivin Oxy Adult Nasal drops can cause side effects, although not everyone who uses them experiences the side effects. Local discomfort may occur after applying the drops if you have sensitive nasal passages. Occasionally, the following side effects have been reported. If you experience any of these, stop using Otrivin and seek immediate medical help:

‒ Trouble breathing or swallowing

‒ Nosebleeds

‒ Severe itching of the skin, rashes, or raised bumps

‒ Swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat

Common side effects of the medicine include headache, dryness, irritation of the nasal mucosa, nausea, and a local burning sensation, as well as a burning sensation in the nose and throat, local irritation, dryness of the nasal membrane, and temporary visual disturbances that pass quickly. If any of these side effects get serious, talk to your healthcare provider right away.

How to Use

Xylometazoline nasal spray usage instructions:

For adults and children over 12 years of age: The recommended dose is 2 to 4 drops in each nostril 2 to 3 times a day. Before applying the nasal drops, clean your nose properly. Tilt your head back as far as it is comfortable to you. Gently squeeze the bottle to release 2 to 3 drops into each nostril. To avoid the possible spread of infection, Otrivin should only be used by one person. To maintain hygiene, use the product for no more than 28 days after opening. Do not exceed the recommended dosage prescribed by your healthcare specialist. It is not recommended to take decongestants for more than seven consecutive days.
