Otrivin Paediatric Nasal Drops 0.05% is a prescription medicine for children experiencing a blocked nose due to a cold, sinusitis, or allergic rhinitis. It is a nasal decongestant specially formulated for children. It acts in just two minutes and offers long-lasting relief from nasal congestion for up to 12 hours. The nasal drops contain the active component Xylometazoline, which helps to reduce swelling and congestion. It helps quickly relieve a blocked nasal passage, allowing the child to breathe normally.

Precautions with Xylometazoline nasal drops

Avoid touching the tip of the bottle while putting it into your child’s nose. If this happens, be sure to rinse the tip of the bottle with hot water and dry it with a clean tissue before replacing the cap. Otrivin paediatric nasal drops 0.05% are not intended for use in children under one year old. It should not be used if the child is allergic to Xylometazoline or any other ingredients in the medicine. Otrivin nasal drop is contraindicated in children suffering from narrow-angle glaucoma (elevated eye pressure). Children with chronic nasal inflammation have very dry nasal passages. How to use Xylometazoline nasal drops?

Otrivin Paediatric 0.05% is to be used as nasal drops. Follow the usage instructions provided by your child’s paediatrician for the correct use of Otrivin paediatric Nasal drops. Before applying the nasal drops, make sure your child’s nose is clean. Tilt your child’s head slightly back and, without touching the nozzle, carefully administer the drops into each nostril. Hold the tilted head of your baby for a few minutes to allow the medication to spread throughout the nose. If the nasal drop completely misses the child’s nose, apply the drop again. Moreover, if you think some part of the Otrivin nasal drop gets into the nose, avoid applying it again. Repeat the steps for the other nose as well. After applying to both eyes, immediately clean and dry the nozzle before replacing the cap on the bottle. It is best to use one bottle for one child, as this helps prevent the possible spread of infection. In case of accidental ingestion, contact your child’s paediatrician. In general, Otrivin paediatric nasal drops are used in the following dose:

For children aged 1 to 5 years: The usual suggested dose is 1 to 2 drops into each nostril, every 8 to 10 hours.  Make sure you do not exceed three applications a day into each nostril.

For children aged 6 to 11 years, the usual suggested dose is 2 to 4 drops into each nostril, 2 to 3 times a day as needed. Be sure to follow your child’s paediatrician’s instructions. And avoid exceeding three applications a day into the nostril. The last dose of Otrivin paediatric nasal drop can be applied before going to bed. The paediatrician should strictly recommend the frequency and duration of treatment. They advise against using this nasal drop for more than ten consecutive days. If signs and symptoms persist, seek medical help.  Prolonged and excessive usage of this nasal formulation may cause the stiffness in your child’s nose to return or even worsen in some conditions.
