Pacroma 1% cream is prescribed for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (also known as eczema). It effectively treats the symptoms of eczema, including redness, small bumps, itching, and skin thickening. The topical medication can be used for repeated episodes of eczema. It is best to start the treatment as soon as possible to avoid progression to more severe symptoms, which may require the use of topical steroids. Each gram of Pacroma cream 1% contains Pimecrolimus (the active ingredient), which works by relieving itching and improving rashes in cases of atopic dermatitis.
Precautions and warnings with Pimecrolimus cream
The use of Pacroma 1% cream is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to Pimecrolimus or any other inactive ingredient in the cream. The safety of the topical formulation for prolonged use is not known. A very small population of people who have used Pimecrolimus cream have developed skin cancer or lymphoma. But the reason why this topical medication causes these cancers has not been shown. Due to this:
‒ Do not use Pimecrolimus cream continuously for a longer duration
‒ Apply it to areas of your skin that have eczema
‒ Avoid applying the cream on a child under two years of age.
It is still unclear whether the Pacroma 1% formulation is safe and effective in individuals with a weakened immune system. It should not be used on children under two years of age. Before you use Pimecrolimus, tell your dermatologist if you are suffering from a skin disease called Netherton's syndrome (a rare inherited condition), any infection on your skin (such as chicken pox, herpes), or a weakened immune system, are pregnant, or are a breastfeeding woman.
Tell your dermatologist about all the medications you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Let your healthcare provider know about all the skin medications and products you use. Patients should avoid using tanning beds, sun lamps, or receiving treatment with ultraviolet therapy during treatment with Pimecrolimus. Moreover, limit sun exposure during the treatment, even when there is no medicine on your skin. If you need to step out into the sun, follow these sun-protective measures to safeguard your treated skin from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Cover your skin with loose-fitting clothes. You can also discuss with your dermatologist about other types of sun protection measures you should use. Pacroma is for topical use only. Do not let the topical medications get into your nose, eyes, mouth, vagina and rectum. In the event of accidental ingestion, rinse the affected area thoroughly with water, as burning or irritation may occur. Do not apply cream to skin areas that have been affected by cancer.
Side effects of Pimecrolimus cream
These are not all the side effects that patients using Pacroma 1% may experience. If any side effects occur that are not listed below, it is essential to consult a dermatologist. Side effects may include headache, flu-like symptoms, common cold, stuffy nose, sore throat, fever, cough, viral infection, facial flushing, skin irritations, skin discolouration, nasopharyngitis (infection of the nose and throat), and a sensation of warmth or redness at the application site. Serious side effects associated with this topical medication include:
‒ Allergic reaction: Trouble swallowing, breathlessness, itching, hives, fever, swelling of your tongue or throat
‒ Swollen lymph nodes: tenderness in the lymph nodes, bumps in your neck, armpits, or groin.
‒ Herpes skin infections, including cold sores, shingles, or chicken pox: Tingling sensation or itching on the skin, fever, fluid-filled blisters that can be painful, skin rash, scabs, sores, skin pain or crusting of the skin.
Application instructions of Pimecrolimus cream
Use the cream only on areas of your skin that are affected by eczema. Typically, treatment begins to provide symptomatic relief within one week. It is important to use this topical formulation as instructed by your dermatologist. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before applying the cream. Apply a thin layer of Pacroma cream 1% to the affected skin twice a day. Use the cream for a short duration, and if required, treatment may be repeated with breaks in between under a dermatologist's supervision. Avoid covering the skin being treated with dressings, bandages, or wraps. After applying the topical medication, you can wear normal clothing.
Discontinue treatment when the signs and symptoms of eczema, including rash, itching, and redness, have disappeared, or as directed by your dermatologist. Contact your dermatologist if your symptoms worsen with Pacroma application, if you develop an infection on your skin, or if symptoms do not improve after six weeks of treatment. Sometimes, other skin diseases can resemble eczema.
