Each Rivamer 1.5 mg hard capsule contains the active substance Rivastigmine, a prescription treatment for individuals with mild to moderately severe dementia of Alzheimer’s disease. Rivastigmine belongs to a class of drugs known as cholinesterase inhibitors. The drug class work by blocking the normal breakdown of acetylcholine. Those with Alzheimer’s disease have low levels of acetylcholine in the brain. By blocking the action of certain enzymes responsible for the breakdown of acetylcholine, Rivamer allows levels of acetylcholine to increase in the brain. This, in turn, reduces the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease associated with Parkinson’s disorder. Cholinesterase inhibitors have been shown to have a modest effect on dementia symptoms such as cognition. Alzheimer’s dementia is a progressive brain disorder that gradually affects memory, behaviour, and intellectual ability.

Do not take Rivamer 1.5 mg if you are/have:

  • Allergic to Rivastigmine or any other components of the drug
  • Allergic to certain medicines, including neostigmine used to treat myasthenia gravis.
  • Previously used a Rivastigmine patch and had developed a skin reaction, progressing to blistering and skin inflammation and not improving within two days after removing the patch.
  • Tell your doctor before taking Rivamer if you have or ever had:
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • An active stomach ulcer
  • Seizures
  • Asthma
  • Difficulties passing urine
  • Impaired kidney function
  • Impaired liver function, low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood

There is no relevant use of this Alzheimer’s drug in a pediatric population. Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines. A Rivastigmine formulation should not be used simultaneously as other medicines with similar effects to cholinesterase inhibitors. Rivamer might interfere with medicines used to relieve stomach cramps, relieve bladder problems, or treat Parkinson’s disease. Inform your doctor if you undergo surgery while taking a Rivastigmine formulation.

You may experience side effects more often when you begin a medicinal treatment or increase a dose. Usually, the side effects resolve as your body gets to the medicine. Common side effects of Rivamer are headache, sweating, stomach pain, anxiety, drowsiness, weight loss, heartburn, dizziness, loss of appetite, and sickness. If any of these side effects become serious or do not go away, please tell your doctor or seek medical advice immediately.

Take Rivamer 1.5 mg as per your doctor’s recommendation. If you do not understand the dosing regimen given on your prescription, please check with your doctor. When your doctor starts treatment, they will tell you what dose of Rivastigmine to take. Usually, treatment begins with a lower dose, and your doctor may then gradually increase your dose. Do not skip your doctor’s appointment during the treatment as it is required to monitor your condition or whether the medicine is working for you not.

Your doctor will also monitor your weight while you are receiving Rivastigmine tablets. If you did not consume Rivamer tablets as prescribed for three consecutive days, do not take the next dose until you speak to your doctor. You may be asked to take the capsule twice daily with food. You must swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not open or chew the capsule. To benefit from your Alzheimer’s drug, take it every day exactly as your doctor told you. If you accidentally take more tablets, then you should inform your doctor. You may require immediate medical attention. People with an overdose may experience a decrease in the size of pupils, stomach pain, trouble breathing, increased sweating, increase in tear production, feeling sick, loss of control of bowel movements, high blood pressure.

What is Rivastigmine and what is it used for?

Rivastigmine is a medicine used to help people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia caused by Parkinson's disease. Alzheimer's is a condition where memory, thinking, and daily activities gradually become harder as brain cells stop working properly. Rivamer 1.5 mg contains rivastigmine and works by slowing down the worsening of symptoms like forgetfulness, confusion, and difficulty with everyday tasks. While it doesn't cure Alzheimer's or stop the disease completely, it can help patients maintain their abilities for longer and improve their quality of life during the earlier and middle stages of the condition.

How does Rivastigmine actually work in the body?

Rivastigmine works by protecting a natural chemical messenger in your brain called acetylcholine, which is important for memory, thinking, and learning. In people with Alzheimer's disease, this chemical gets broken down too quickly by certain enzymes, leaving less of it available for brain cells to communicate with each other. Rivamer 1.5 mg blocks these enzymes from destroying acetylcholine, allowing more of it to stay active in the brain. This helps nerve cells send messages more effectively, which can improve memory, awareness, and the ability to perform daily activities for as long as possible.

How long does Rivamer 1.5 mg take to start working?

Rivamer 1.5 mg usually starts building up in your system within a few hours, but you won't notice improvements right away. Most people begin to see small positive changes in memory, thinking, or daily functioning after about four to twelve weeks of regular use. The effects are often gradual and may be more noticeable to family members or caregivers than to the person taking the medicine. Your doctor will likely start you on a lower dose and increase it slowly over several weeks to find the right strength that works best while keeping side effects manageable.

When and how should I take Rivamer 1.5 mg?

Take Rivamer 1.5 mg twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, preferably with food. Taking it with meals helps reduce stomach upset, which is a common side effect when you first start this medicine. Swallow the capsule whole with water and try to take it at the same times each day to help you remember and keep steady levels in your body. Your doctor will guide you through a gradual increase in dosage over several weeks. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions, as they will tailor the dose to your individual needs and response to treatment.

What should I do if I forget to take a dose of Rivamer 1.5 mg?

If you miss a dose of Rivamer 1.5 mg and it's only been a few hours, take it as soon as you remember, preferably with food. However, if it's nearly time for your next scheduled dose, just skip the missed one and continue with your regular routine. Never take two doses at once to make up for the one you forgot, as this can increase the risk of side effects like nausea, vomiting, or dizziness. If you miss several doses in a row, contact your doctor before restarting, as you may need to go back to a lower dose and build up again gradually.

Is it safe to take Rivamer 1.5 mg for a long time?

Yes, Rivamer 1.5 mg is designed for long-term use in managing Alzheimer's disease and similar memory conditions, and many people take it safely for months or years. The medicine works best when taken continuously, as stopping it can lead to a return or worsening of symptoms. Your doctor will monitor your progress regularly through check-ups to make sure the medicine is still working well and not causing any problems. Long-term side effects are usually manageable, and most people tolerate rivastigmine well once their body adjusts. Always attend your follow-up appointments so your treatment stays on track.

Can I take Rivamer 1.5 mg with other medicines I am already on?

Rivamer 1.5 mg can interact with certain medicines, so it's important to tell your doctor about everything you're taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Medicines that affect heart rate, muscle relaxants used during surgery, other dementia drugs, anti-inflammatory painkillers, and some medicines for stomach problems or urinary issues may interact with rivastigmine. Your doctor will review your full medication list and adjust doses or timing if needed to keep you safe. Most people can take rivastigmine alongside their other treatments without problems when properly monitored.

How is Rivamer 1.5 mg different from similar medicines used for Alzheimer's?

Rivamer 1.5 mg belongs to a group of medicines called cholinesterase inhibitors, which also includes donepezil and galantamine. While all three work by protecting the same brain chemical, rivastigmine is unique because it blocks two different enzymes instead of just one, which some studies suggest may provide broader benefits. Rivastigmine is also approved for dementia related to Parkinson's disease, not just Alzheimer's. Each medicine has different dosing schedules and side effect profiles, so your doctor will choose the one that best fits your specific situation, symptoms, and how well you tolerate it.

Is the generic version containing Rivastigmine just as good as the branded medicine?

Yes, generic rivastigmine medicines like Rivamer 1.5 mg contain the same active ingredient in the same strength as branded versions and work exactly the same way in your body. Generic medicines must meet strict quality and safety standards set by regulatory authorities to prove they are just as effective as the original brand. The main difference is usually the price, with generics costing significantly less while delivering the same benefits. Many doctors and patients around the world use generic rivastigmine successfully for managing Alzheimer's disease, making treatment more affordable without compromising on quality or results.

What side effects can Rivastigmine cause?

Rivastigmine commonly causes nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and stomach pain, especially when you first start taking it or when your dose increases. These usually improve after a few weeks as your body adjusts. Some people also experience dizziness, headache, tiredness, or weight loss. Less commonly, rivastigmine can cause trembling, sweating, slower heart rate, or trouble sleeping. Taking the medicine with food helps reduce stomach-related side effects. If you experience severe vomiting, fainting, chest pain, difficulty passing urine, or worsening confusion, contact your doctor promptly as these may need medical attention.

Who should NOT take Rivastigmine or needs to be extra careful with it?

Rivastigmine should not be taken if you're allergic to it or similar medicines. People with certain heart rhythm problems, stomach ulcers, severe asthma, urinary blockage, or seizure disorders need extra caution and close monitoring when using rivastigmine. If you have liver or kidney problems, your doctor may adjust your dose or watch you more carefully. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should discuss the risks and benefits with their doctor before starting this medicine. People who have had recent stomach surgery or those taking medicines that slow the heart also need special consideration before using rivastigmine.
