Tavin EM is combined with other antiviral drugs to treat HIV-1 in adults and children weighing at least 17 kg. It can also be given to at-risk adults and adolescents weighing at least 35 kg for pre-exposure prophylaxis to lower the risk of HIV-1 infection. HIV-1 is the virus that leads to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, also known as AIDS. Tavin EM contains the prescription medicines Tenofovir, Disoproxil fumarate, and Emtricitabine. Tenofovir 300 mg belongs to a class of drugs known as nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor that comes with activity against human immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV). Doctors prescribe it as a single 300/200 mg tablet once daily.
Emtricitabine is called a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, which helps to control HIV infection. Together, they help decrease the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can function better. This further lowers the chance of developing HIV complications (e.g., cancer or new infection) and improves the overall quality of life. The HIV drugs should be used in conjunction with safer sex practices for pre-exposure prophylaxis to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infection HIV-1 in adults at high risk. The combination drug is also sold as Travuda.
Warnings and precautions of emtricitabine/tenofovir
Patients receiving Tavin EM tablets or any other antiretroviral therapy may continue to develop opportunistic infections and other complications of HIV infection and, therefore, should remain under close clinical trials by healthcare providers experienced in the treatment of patients with HIV-associated disorders. Patients should be informed that Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg tablet does not cure HIV infection.
Tell your healthcare provider before taking Tavin EM if you have liver problems (hepatitis B infection), bone problems, kidney disease, receive kidney dialysis treatment, or have other medical conditions. If you are a female receiving Tenofovir/Emtricitabine to reduce the risk of contracting HIV-1 infection and conceiving during the treatment, speak to your healthcare specialist if you should keep taking this antiretroviral medicine. You should not breastfeed your baby if you have HIV-1 as there is an increased risk of passing the virus to your baby. Discuss with your healthcare provider the best way to feed your baby. Do not take this HIV medication if you also take other drugs, such as:
– medicines that contain tenofovir alafenamide
– medicines, which also contain tenofovir and Emtricitabine
– medicine containing lamivudine
Tavin EM 300 200 mg may interact with other medicines. Especially inform your doctor if you take atazanavir, didanosine, darunavir, ledipasvir with sofusbir, and lopinavir with ritonavir. Your doctor may need to check if you take any of these medicines with Tavin EM.
Common tenofovir/emtricitabine side effects
Tenofovir Tenof EM may cause side effects. Travuda side effects can be serious, as mentioned above. Many emtricitabine side effects, such as nausea or occasional dizziness, are manageable. Other possible Tavin EM side effects include:
– Changes in your immune system (immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome or IRIS). IRIS is a condition that sometimes happens when the immune system starts to recover after treatment with an HIV medicine. As the immune system strengthens, it may respond more to a previously hidden infection.
– Bone-associated problems, including bone pain or softening of the bones (osteopenia), may ultimately contribute to fractures.
Let your healthcare provider know if you have any side effects that bother you or don’t resolve. These are not the possible side effects of Tavin tablets. Speak to your healthcare provider to learn more about the associated adverse effects.
How to take tenofovir/emtricitabine
Take Emtricitabine tenofovir the same way your healthcare has prescribed. You can take this oral medication with or without food—children prescribed with this combination drug are often given a lower-strength tablet than adults. The medicine comes in tablets; your children should swallow the whole pill with adequate water. Let your healthcare specialist know if your child cannot swallow the tablet whole, as they may need an alternative medicine to treat their HIV-1 infection. Your healthcare professional will change the dose based on your adult’s condition and the child’s weight.
Tenofovir emtricitabine is usually taken one time a day. Try to take the dose simultaneously daily to keep the medicine’s level constant in the bloodstream. If you have any renal impairment, your healthcare specialist may ask you to take this antiretroviral drug less often. If you take this combination of medicine to reduce HIV-1, you must also use other methods to reduce your risk of getting HIV. You may be instructed to take this antiretroviral drug every day, not just when you think you have been exposed to HIV-1. Tavin is indicated in combination with safer sex practices for pre-exposure prophylaxis to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1 in adults at high risk. The indication is based on research trials in men who have sex with men at high risk for HIV-1 infection and in heterosexual couples.
