Apigat 5 mg is a medicine containing Apixaban, an anticoagulant or blood thinner, to help prevent and treat blood clots in individuals with an irregular heartbeat. It also causes a significant reduction in the risk of getting clots in people who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgeries. These blood clots can travel throughout the body, resulting in systemic embolism (a block in an artery caused by blood clots) and stroke. Apixaban helps manage blood clots in the legs and the veins of the lungs and their recurrence in either the legs or lungs.

Precautions & Warnings

Do not take Apigat 5 mg if you currently have certain types of abnormal bleeding or have had a serious allergic reaction to Apixaban. Before you take this medication, inform your healthcare provider if you:

     –     Have liver or kidney problems.

     –     Have you ever had bleeding problems

     –     Have any other medical condition

     –     Are pregnant or plan to conceive. It is not known if Apixaban will cause harm to your unborn baby.

     –     Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is still not known if Apixaban is passed into your breast milk. You and your healthcare provider will decide whether to take this blood thinner or breastfeed. You are not supposed to do both.

     –     Have any surgery, medical, or dental procedures.

     –     Take medicines that may increase your risk of bleeding or stroke when taken with Apixaban.

These medications include:

     –     Long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

     –     Warfarin sodium

     –     Aspirin or aspirin-containing products

     –     Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or serotonin-norepinephrine  reuptake  inhibitors

     –     Other medications to help prevent or treat blood clots

Take special care with Apixaban; if you are aware that you are suffering from a disease called antiphospholipid syndrome (a disease of the immune system that causes an increased risk of blood clots), talk to your health care provider, who will decide if the treatment may require to be changed. If you need to have surgery or a procedure that may cause bleeding, your healthcare specialist might ask you to stop taking this medication for a short period temporarily. If you doubt whether a procedure may cause bleeding, ask your healthcare provider. This medication is not recommended for kids and adolescents under 18 years of age.

Side effects of Apixaban

Apigat 5 mg can cause a skin rash or severe allergic reaction.  Seek immediate medical help if you develop any of the following symptoms:

     –     Swelling of your face or tongue

     –     Chest pain or tightness

     –     Feeling dizziness or faint

     –     Trouble breathing or wheezing

Also, report if there is any blood in the urine or passing black, tarry, or blood-stained stools.   Speak to your healthcare provider if any side effect bothers you or is not resolved. Patients should seek immediate medical help if they fall or injure themselves during therapy, especially if they accidentally hit their head due to the increased risk of bleeding.

How and when to use Apixaban?

Always take Apigat 5 mg as your healthcare provider has told you. Take this medication before or after consuming food. Swallow the pill with a glass full of water. Try to take the tablet at the same time every day to receive the best treatment effect. If you have difficulty swallowing the tablet, speak to your healthcare provider about other ways to take Apixaban. You can crush the tablet and mix it with water, apple juice, or apple puree immediately before you take it. You can crush the tablet with the help of a pestle and mortar. If you do not take this medication regularly, it will not be effective, and your risk of developing a clot increases.

Dosage

The dose is usually 5 mg twice daily (one in the morning and one at night). You should be prescribed with 2.5 mg dose if you are elderly (80 years or older), weigh 60 kg or less, or if you have poor kidney function. Apigat should be swallowed with water and taken before or after food. Overdose of Apixaban may result in a higher risk of bleeding. Do not stop taking the medication without speaking to your healthcare provider first because the risk of developing a blood clot could be higher if you stop the medication too early.
