Cyclomune 0.1% (3ml) is a prescription eye drop used to treat symptoms of moderate to severe dry eye disease in adult patients who have not improved despite treatment with tear substitutes. It can be used in patients whose eyes are not producing enough tears to keep the eyes moist and comfortable. Cyclosporine is the active ingredient present in the ophthalmic solution, which reduces the inflammation in the eye, thereby improving tear production and resolving the symptoms of dry eye.
Warning and precautions with Cyclosporine eye drop
Cyclomune eye drops should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to the active substance or any other ingredients present in the formulation. Its use is contraindicated in patients with ocular or periocular malignancies or premalignant conditions. The eye drops should not be used in patients with ocular or periocular infections. Treatment with Cyclomune eye drops should not be initiated or continued until the infection has been fully resolved. A reversible underlying eye disorder not associated with dry eye condition should be treated before starting Cyclosporine eye drops. The ophthalmic formulation has not been studied in patients with a history of ocular herpes and should, therefore, be used cautiously in such patients. Be careful when handling the eye drop bottle; avoid touching your eye or other eye surfaces with the bottle tip to prevent contamination and potential eye injury.
The eye drops should not be used in the presence of contact lenses. Patients dealing with dry eye disease should avoid wearing contact lenses. They should be removed before using the Cyclosporine solution. Contact lenses may be reinserted fifteen minutes after using Cyclosporine eye drops. It should not be used in paediatric patients below the age of 18 years. Coadministration of Cyclomune with other eye drops containing corticosteroids may increase the effects of Cyclosporine on the immune system.
Before you use Cyclosporine eye drops, speak to your healthcare specialist if you are pregnant or planning to conceive. While there is no adequate evidence to demonstrate the effects on human pregnancy, you should discuss with your healthcare professional how best to proceed. Furthermore, it is unknown whether Cyclosporine is transferred into breast milk. Also, inform them if you have a history of herpes keratitis (a corneal infection caused by the herpex simplex virus), as the eye drop has not been clinically tested for use in people with such conditions.
Side effects of Cyclosporine eye drop
Ocular burning is a common side effect associated with the use of Cylomune 0.1% eye drops. Other commonly reported side effects are headache, eye irritation, eye pain, foreign body sensation, photophobia, eye discharge, dry eye, pruritus, blurred vision, and conjunctival hyperaemia (redness).
These side effects usually improve on their own as you become used to this ophthalmic formulation. There is a possibility that you experience an allergic reaction to Cyclosporine. The symptoms include face swelling, throat swelling, tongue swelling, itchy skin, and breathlessness, which may occur with the use of one eye drop of Cyclosporine. If these reactions continue to affect you, contact your healthcare provider. This is not the complete list of side effects. If you develop any side effects while using this ophthalmic solution, seek immediate medical attention.
Usage of Cyclosporine eye drop
Use a single drop of 0.1 ml of Cyclomune eye drops two times a day in each eye, approximately twelve hours apart. It can be used in conjunction with other ophthalmic preparations, but a minimum 15-minute gap should be allowed between applications. If you wear contact lenses, ensure that you remove them before using this ophthalmic formulation. You should wait at least fifteen minutes after administering eye drops before putting them back in. If you are using tear eye drops, ensure that you use them 15 minutes before or after using these eye drops. Follow these instructions for proper usage.
‒ Wash and dry your hands before using Cyclomune eye drops.
‒ Place a single drop into the eye, taking care that the tip of the bottle does not touch the eye.
‒ After administering the eye drops, close your eyelids for a minute and avoid squeezing or blinking. Gently press the inner corner with your finger for about 1 to 2 minutes. This helps prevent side effects.
‒ Use a clean tissue or cotton swab to gently wipe away any excess fluid from the eye, if needed.
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. However, if the time to take the next dose is near, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Make sure you do not use this ophthalmic solution more than twice in the same day.
