Empamore 25 mg was introduced in the medical industry to treat type 2 diabetes to improve glycaemic control in adults as monotherapy. It is used when diet and exercise alone cannot control high blood sugar levels in patients for whom metformin is considered unsuitable due to intolerance. As an add-on combination therapy, Empamore is used along with other glucose-lowering medications, such as insulin, when these, along with diet and lifestyle changes, fail to control blood sugar levels adequately.

Empagliflozin, the active ingredient in Empamore, blocks the activity of certain proteins in the kidneys. By blocking the action of protein, this antidiabetic agent causes blood sugar to be removed through urine, and sugar levels in the bloodstream that are excessively high because of type 2 diabetes are thereby reduced.

Precaution with Empagliflozin

‒    Empamore 25 mg is not recommended for people with type 1 diabetes. It may increase the risk of diabetes ketoacidosis (defined as increased ketones in blood or urine) in such patients. Before starting the treatment, factors in the patient's history that may show any signs of ketoacidosis should be considered. Treatment interruption may occur in cases where patients are hospitalized for surgery or acute, serious health issues. In both cases, treatment with Empamore may be restarted once the patient's condition has stabilized.

‒    It should not be used in treating chronic renal insufficiency in individuals suffering from polycystic kidney disease or patients who need or have a recent history of intravenous immunosuppressive therapy of more than 45 mg of prednisone or equivalent for renal disorder. Antidiabetic medicine is not believed to benefit this population.

‒    People with diabetes with kidney disorders should not use this medication to lower blood sugar levels.

‒    Taking certain other medications with Empamore can cause drug interaction. It is especially important to inform yoru healthcare provider about below:

‒    Medication that is prescribed to eliminate water from the body (diuretics). It is advised to discontinue treatment.

‒    Medications to reduce blood sugar, such as insulin or sulfonylurea. Lowering the dose of these medicines is advised to prevent significant drops in blood sugar levels.

‒    Empamore is not recommended for use in pregnant women; therefore, it is important to inform the healthcare provider before taking this antidiabetic agent if pregnancy is confirmed.

Side effects of Empagliflozin

It is important to seek immediate medical help if any of the following occurs:

‒    Low blood sugar: Taking Empamore with sulfonylurea may increase the risk of low blood sugar. The symptoms of low blood sugar include headache, excessive hunger, sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, and feeling very anxious.

‒    Urinary tract infection: This infection may also occur. The signs of a urinary tract infection are cloudy urine, a burning sensation when passing urine, pain in the pelvic region, or mild back pain.

Common side effects of Empamore include itching, thrush (or genital yeast infection), and increased urination.

How to use an Empagliflozin?

The diabetes medication is in tablet form and taken with a glass of water. The antidiabetic medicine should be taken at a scheduled time. Do not take two doses on the same day.

Monotherapy and additional combination therapy

The usual suggested starting dose is 10 mg of Empagliflozin once a day as monotherapy and additional therapy with other antidiabetes medicine, including insulin. For those tolerating 10 mg doses once a day and need strict glycaemic control, the dose may gradually be increased to 25 mg once a day. The maximum suggested daily dose should not exceed 25 mg. When used along with sulfonylurea (another diabetic agent) or insulin, generally, healthcare providers consider a lower dose of sulfonylurea (another oral diabetes medicine) or insulin to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia (abnormally low levels of glucose).

Special population

‒    Renal insufficiency: In the case of mild kidney problems, the dose is generally limited to 10 mg once a day. Empamore should not be given to patients with end-stage kidney disorder or to those who are on dialysis, as healthcare experts believe that the medication is not effective in these patients.

‒    Liver insufficiency: Clinical experience in patients with severe liver problems is limited and, therefore, not be used in this population.

‒    Elderly: In elderly patients aged 85 years and older, antidiabetic medicine is not recommended.

‒    Pediatric patients (below 18 years): For pediatric use, it is always best to consult with a pediatrician, a healthcare expert in the care of children, before administering this medicine.

Furthermore, lifestyle modifications such as diet and regular exercise can support the human body's better use of blood sugar. Therefore, it is important to have a balanced diet and stick to an exercise program recommended by the healthcare professional while taking this antidiabetic medicine.
