Peroclin gel 5% is a fixed combination product containing benzoyl peroxide and Clindamycin, widely used in treating acne vulgaris. Together, they treat acne by penetrating the skin and killing acne-causing bacteria. Clindamycin improves the appearance of acne by reducing the levels of Propionibacterium acnes and decreasing inflammation. Benzoyl peroxide stops the growth of bacteria and reduces oil production in the skin, thus unclogging your skin pores.
Products containing Clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide are bactericidal and reduce the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. However, a potential limitation of this fixed-dose combination product is dryness and irritation that may impact patient compliance and limit product use.
Before using Peroclin gel, let your dermatologist know if you are allergic to benzoyl peroxide or Clindamycin or if you have any other allergies. This topical formulation may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your dermatologist for more information. Before using this medicine, let your dermatologist know your medical history, especially intestinal disorders such as ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis, antibiotic-associated colitis, ulcerative colitis, and clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
The medicine may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time of sun exposure. Avoid sunlamps and tanning booths. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing whenever you step outside. Also, let your dermatologist know immediately if you get sunburned or have redness. Avoid contact with hair and clothes, as they may bleach them.
Some products may interact with Peroclin gel, including other medications used on the skin.
Benzoyl peroxide and Clindamycin may cause side effects. Tell your dermatologist if these symptoms are severe or do not resolve within a few days. These include itching, dry skin, red skin, and peeling skin. Some side effects associated with the use of Peroclin gel can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, talk to your dermatologist straight away:
- Severe stomach pain or cramps
- Blood or mucus in the stool
- Severe diarrhoea
- Changes in your skin or nails could indicate infection with a fungus.
The fixed combination medicine may cause other side effects. Call your dermatologist if you develop any unusual problems while using this medicine.
Read the prescription carefully before you start using Peroclin gel 5%. Before using this medication, wash your hands gently with a mild, non-medicated cleanser, rinse with warm water, and pat your skin dry. Be sure to avoid your eyes, mouth, inside nose, and any areas of broken skin. Rinse your hands after each use.
Peroclin gel 5% should be applied twice daily, morning or evening, or as directed by the dermatologist to affected areas after the skin is gently washed, rinsed with water, and patted dry.
It may take up to 2 to 3 weeks before you see improvement in your symptoms. The combination medicine may take some time to produce results. Use this medication as directed by your dermatologist and let your dermatologist know if symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.
Use this gel formulation to get maximum benefit. Please do not change your dosing regimen without discussing it with your doctor.
