Silofast 8 mg is a prescription medicine for treating signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a common progressive disease among men, more prevalent in older men.

Silofast 8 mg contains Silodosin as the main active ingredient. It is an alpha-adrenergic antagonist that helps relieve symptoms such as difficulty passing urine; however, the medicine does not decrease the prostate's size.

Commonly reported BPH symptoms to include urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia. These bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms may affect the quality of life of a man suffering from BPH. Although uncommon, the condition may also result in severe complications, including acute urinary retention, urinary tract infections, bladder stones, renal insufficiency, hematuria, and renal failure.

The first treatment choice for patients with BPH depends on the presence and severity of symptoms. Adrenergic receptor antagonists are commonly used as the first-line treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH. Silodosin works by blocking the action of adrenergic chemicals, which causes the contraction of smooth muscles in the bladder and prostate. Silofast relaxes the smooth muscles, which relieves the pressure exerted by the prostate gland on the urine tube attached to the bladder. This improves urine flow and reduces BPH symptoms.

You should not take Silofast 8 mg if you are allergic to Silodosin, have kidney or liver disease, have a history of orthostatic hypotension, or are taking medications that can interact with the working mechanism of Silodosin. The medicines that may affect how Silofast capsules work include other alpha-blockers that relax smooth muscles, cimetidine for stomach ulcers, and the blood thinner warfarin.

Silodosin's most commonly reported side effects are dizziness, abnormal ejaculation, palpitations, postural hypotension, and weakness. If a persistent painful erection occurs, take immediate medical attention.

You should take Silofast 8 mg capsules with a glass of water and swallow the medicine without chewing or crushing it. Take medicine with food once daily at the same time each day.

You might continue to take the drug for 2 to 4 weeks. In between, if your symptoms show no improvement, call your doctor to seek further advice. Following simple lifestyle changes can help manage your condition better. Try to urinate as soon as you feel the urge; do not strain to push your empty bladder. Avoid drinking alcohol or coffee a few hours before going to bed.
