Tretin 0.1% is a topical medication used to treat acne. It contains the active component Tretinoin, a retinoid that is a form of vitamin A. Retinoids help stimulate the turnover of skin cells. Dead skin cell sheds more quickly as new skin cells appear on the surface. Rapid cell turnover opens clogged pores, releasing trapped bacteria or irritants that are responsible for causing your acne. As a retinoid formulation, Tretin helps stimulate the production of sebum (natural oil), which can prevent future breakouts. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which help to clear up active acne pustules.

If Tretinin is going to work for you, you will notice a continued improvement in your appearance after 6 to 12 weeks of regular application. Do not lose hope if you see no immediate improvement. Do not discontinue treatment at the first signs of improvement. Once your acne vulgaris is under control, you should continue using the formulation until your dermatologist instructs otherwise.

Precautions with Tretinoin cream

If a reaction suggesting sensitivity or any irritation occurs, use of this retinoid formulation should be discontinued. Excessive exposure to sunlight, including sunlamps, should be minimised while receiving this antiacne treatment. Patients with sunburn should be advised not to use topical medication until they are fully recovered, as this increases their susceptibility to sunlight due to the use of Tretinoin. Those who step outside in the sun and those with inherent sensitivity to sunlight should use sun-protective measures. Use of sunscreens and wearing protective clothing over the treated area is recommended when exposure can’t be avoided. Weather extremes, such as cold or wind, may be irritating to patients undergoing treatment with Tretinoin.

Side effects of Tretinoin cream

Burning, peeling, stinging, redness, itching, and eye irritation may occur in some people during the first or second weeks of treatment. These adverse effects can be easily minimised by following the dermatologist’s instructions carefully. If the effects become excessively bothersome, stop the treatment and consult your dermatologist.

Usage instructions – Tretinoin cream

Tretinoin Tretin 0.1% should be applied once a day, preferably before bedtime, to the affected skin where acne lesions are present, using enough to cover the entire affected area. Application of the cream may cause a feeling of warmth or a stinging sensation. In cases where it is necessary to stop topical therapy or reduce the frequency of application temporarily, treatment may be restarted or the frequency of application increased when the patient is able to tolerate it again. During the initial weeks of the treatment, worsening of inflammatory lesions may occur. This is temporary and should not be considered a reason to discontinue the topical therapy. Results should appear after two to three weeks; however, treatment may last more than six weeks to achieve significant improvement.

To achieve the best results with Tretin therapy, it is essential to use it properly. You need to follow the special treatment plan your dermatologist has outlined for you and be patient. Here, it is important to note that Tretinoin, when used properly, may allow users to see improvement within twelve weeks.  For correct use of this medicine, keep these simple instructions in mind:

‒    Apply Tretin once nightly before bedtime. Your dermatologist advises that, especially if your skin is sensitive, you begin the treatment by applying this topical medication on alternate days. Before applying the antiacne cream, first wash your facial skin with mild soap and pat it dry. Wait for at least twenty minutes before applying this cream, as the skin needs to dry completely to minimise possible irritation. Ensure you do not use more than the amount recommended by your dermatologist or use it more frequently than directed. Excessive usage may irritate the skin and waste medicine, and will surely not yield faster or better results. Keep the product away from the eye, nose, mouth and open wounds. Ensure that you spread the medication evenly from these areas when applying the cream.

‒    Squeeze a pea-sized amount of the medicine onto your fingertips, as this should be enough for your whole face. Rub it gently in a circular motion. The medication should become visible almost immediately. If it is still visible, you are using too much of this medication, or you are using too much of this topical formulation. First, cover the affected area, and then spread the treatment evenly over the entire affected area. It is always recommended to apply a moisturiser that will not aggravate your acne every morning after you wash your face. It is always better to use a mild, non-medicated soap. Avoid harsh scrubbing or frequent washing.
