Everything about Sunscreens

To keep your skin safe and healthy in summer, here we have brought up some tips for skin care to avoid sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

What is Sunscreen?

You would have heard many times about the CTM (cleanser, toner, and moisturizer) which is a very important factor to improve skin health. But what do you think about Sunscreen? Sunscreens are also as important as a facial cleanser, skin toner, and skin moisturizer. It acts as a safeguard that protects your skin from UV (ultraviolet) rays of Sun and keeps your skin glowing. There are two types of UV rays that affect your skin. UVA rays penetrate the middle layer of the skin and cause premature skin aging. UVB rays reach the outer layer of the skin and typically cause sunburn.

It is also important to note that no sunscreen provides 100% protection from the UV rays. No matter how high the number is, all sunscreens work for the same amount of time and need to be reapplied at every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States.

What Type of Sunscreen is best?

There are hundreds of brands of sunscreen available in the market, but choosing the best one is a bit tricky because not all of them are formulated equally to enhance skin health. Some offer better protection to your skin than others do. So, next summer, you should go for a sunscreen that gives your skin better protection. Most of the sunscreens protect against UVA and UVB rays, but you should choose a sunscreen that also protects the skin against HEV (high-energy visible) light, which has been found to induce premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer.

Also, choose a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF, even on overcast days. Water resistant sunscreens also work great especially after swimming or sweating.

How much Sunscreen is needed?

According to the American Academy of Dermatologist, most people don’t apply enough sunscreen to protect the skin completely. In fact, they use only 25-50 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen.

An adequate amount of sunscreen is needed to protect your skin in a better way. According to the study, one ounce of sunscreen is an adequate amount that has to be used on your skin, when it is exposed to water while swimming or to the UV rays, and it should be reapplied every 2 hours.

We have noticed many people use to apply sunscreen when already outside. This is not a correct way. Sun blocks or sunscreens should be applied 20 minutes before stepping outside so that it is properly absorbed and makes a bond with your skin.

In addition, it is very important to apply sunscreen on your lips. Lips are one of the most sensitive areas of the body and using lip balms that contain sunscreen are the best way to protect it. The sunscreen should be use regularly, especially when the individual has a habit of licking his or her lips.

When do you use Sunscreen?

According to the skin care experts, it is very important to use sunscreen all the time when you are out in daylight especially during the summer. You should choose the sunscreen according to your skin type. Sunscreens can prevent your skin from outside damage and harmful rays of the sun. Experts recommend the application of sunscreen to the face after skin moisturizer and facial cleanser.

The one-time application does last all the day:

Like makeup and many other skin care products like skin toner and cleanser, sunscreen also rubs off with water, sweat, and touch. It is not only washed off but also breaks down in sunlight and becomes ineffective. That is why dermatologists recommend applying sunscreen after an interval of 2-3 hours.
