What is acne?
Acne, medically termed Acne Vulgaris, is a common skin disease in which the skin’s pores become clogged. It impacts both men and women, but its effects last longer in young men as they have higher levels of testosterone, which aggravates acne. What causes acne?
There isn’t one particular cause of acne, or clogged pores. Pores open to follicles, which contain hair and an oil gland. When these glands produce too much oil, then dirt, bacteria and dead cells build up and block the pores.

Experts believe an increase in levels of a hormone called androgen is a primary cause of acne. During adolescence, androgen levels rise and that in turn causes the oil glands in the skin to grow. The enlarged gland produces more oil, which can also change into a thick white substance called sebum. The excessive oil and sebum can clog and break down the cellular walls in the pores, causing bacteria to grow and pimples to develop.

There are other studies that show acne is genetic. Medications containing androgen and lithium can also cause acne. For those with sensitive skin, greasy cosmetics can cause an outbreak.

Types of acne
There are three major types of acne – Acne Vulgaris, Cystic Acne and Comedonal Acne. The exact cause of each remains unknown, but there are cures for all.

Acne Vulgaris
The most common type of acne which affects 90% people. It is characterized by the presence of comedones (small flesh-colored, white or dark bumps), pustules and papules. The frequency and severity of attack varies from person to person.

Cystic Acne One of the most severe types of acne, characterized by comedones, cysts, papules and pustules. It is often caused by severe infection or skin inflammation.

Comedonal Acne
The mildest form of the skin disease, it is an outbreak of blackheads and whiteheads. To prevent it from spreading or building up to an infection, it must be treated on time.

Getting rid of acne
There are several ways to get rid of acne and bring back your skin’s natural glow. Depending on the severity of outbreak, there are many oral antibiotics and medicines that can be prescribed.

Here are some home remedies that can used to prevent or contain Acne Vulgaris:

  • Try to avoid oil-based products like skin moisturizers, make-ups, fabric moisturizers and other cosmetics that are commonly used on the skin. The more the oil, the more sebum will be produced on the skin.
  • Regularly washing your face several times a day to remove the daily grime and grease build-up is the easiest and most effective way to prevent or control acne breakouts.
  • Exercise is another great way to improve the skin’s appearance. A half-an-hour of exercise daily or at least four-five times a week is good for skin health. The sweat produced clears your pores and the workout also sets right any fluctuating hormone levels which, in turn, reduce production of sebum in the follicles.
  • Avoid foods that may aggravate acne. Steer clear of fatty foods like pork, dairy products and processed foods including white flour and canned meats. Skip alcoholic beverages and sugary drinks too as they deplete essential vitamins and minerals needed to prevent acne outbreaks.

To prevent an outbreak or growth of acne, you need to watch your personal hygiene and diet. If the outbreak seems severe, consult a physician. Given healthy skin is a sign of beauty, it’s important you take good care of it.
